Panthers power past Plymouth in ‘Pit’

' North Wood put a screeching halt to Plymouth’s win streak Friday night at the Panther Pit, taking a 62-53 victory in Northern Lakes Conference action in a game ?layed before a sellout crowd of ,562 fans. While Coach Dan Gunn’s Panthers were moving their season mark to an impressive f 2-2 (3-1 in NLC), Plymouth fell to 12-1 (3-1 in NLC). Gunn reported with a smile, “I can’t recall us beating anybody else 12-0 and ranked 15th in the state, and it’s a big conference win. We’vestill got a breath of air in the conference. I’m sure appreciative of our guys’ effort. They came through big.” One of the biggest “comethroughs” for the Panthers had to be from Matt Swihart, who replaced Tom Duncan in the starting lineup for North Wood. On the night, Swihart, a junior, scored a career-high 14 points, and grabbed nine rebounds. Swihart earned the starting assignment because Duncan missed a practice due to a football recruiting visit. Also in double figures for the Panthers were Andy Hirschy, with a game-high 26 points, while Mike Leeper chipped in 12. Hirschy also hauled down eight rebounds, and had a key steal late in the contest, while Leeper added a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the Panther effort of 32, which outdid Plymouth’s 23. Jeff Wise added six points for North Wood, including a threepointer that sparked a decisive 205 Panther turnaround that took his team from a 39-34 deficit in the third, to up 54-44 with 2:08
