NLC shutout for NW gridders
By Barb Keiser Editor North Wood’s high-flying varsity football team added another notch to its victoiy gun Friday night, blasting the visiting Northridge Raiders 35-0 in a Northern Lakes Conference shootout. The win gives the Panthers an unblemished 5-0 mark on the season, while the Raidas slipped to 1-4 overall, and 0-4 in NLC action. The Panthers also extended their athome victory streak to 14 games.

The North Wood High School girls’ swim team edged out Warsaw in a Northern Conference meet last week, 103-83. The win moved Woodview to a I- mark on the season, while Nappanee slipped to 2-1. Adam Hochstetler and Josh Coffman each had two hits for Woodview, while Hochstetler, Danny Santisteven, Mike Herteel, and Derrick Thompson each scored a run and Ben Lehman scored twice. In other action last week. Woodview Blue topped Nappanee White II- dropping White to an 0-4 mark, while Blue advanced to 2-2. White’s lone run came in the top of the seventh, while Blue scored in every inning of the contest, with five runs in the third. Danny Santisteven and Mike Hertell each had three hits for Blue, with Santisteven scoring three runs. Adam Hochstetler and Herteel each scored twice. Netters fall The North Wood Middle School seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams both fell to Heritage in last week’s action, with the younger Panthers losing a close three-game match, 15-3, 16-14, 15-13. In seventh grade competition, Amy Hughes led the Panthers with eight service points and 24 passes, while Shelly Stichter added 21 passes. , In the eighth grade round, Carissa Herr and Grace Bonewitz had 28 and 20 passes respectively, while Bonewitz added seven serves with an ace, and nine spikes. Megan Sloat and Carissa Heneach had eight sets, and Brianne Bumworth added four spikes.
North Wood scored in all but the third period of play, putting up an impressive 22 points in the second quarter to give them a comfortable 28-0 edge at the halfway mark. Coach Rich Dodson reported, “The last five minutes before halftime gave us a big lift. Those two scores helped take Northridge out of its strategy and made a big difference for us. It’s nice having our speed and quickness. I feel we can score from anywhere on the field.” He continued, “We wanted the

drive followed a beautiful 46-yard punt return by Matt Bunch. Bunch also opened the secondquarter scoring, on an impressive 62-yard punt return, with Andrews taking it in for the successful twopoint conversion. Andrews followed with a 44-yard pass catch from Andy Roeder for yet another secondquarter tally, and Wes Dodson was good on the PAT kick Bunch came back for a whopping 75-yard run to paydirt at :46 of the
second, with Dodson again good on the kick, for the 28-0 lead, and Northridge left the field at halftime in shock. A three-yard Jake Sellon run in the third, and Dodson’s third successful PAT kick were the final points of the contest, and the Panthers maintained their domination of the NLC. Key to the successful scoring effort was another brilliant punt return, this one a 46-yarder by Andrews. Once again, the Black Crunch defense was brilliant, with senior Tom Duncan recording 12 hits, two for loss, and teammate Brad Baker adding 11, two for loss, to lead the effort.
