Panthers manage NLC win
Ay Bar* Keiser Editor North Wood’s football Panthers managed a win in their Northern Lakes Conference opener at Andrews Field Friday night, 14-10, over a fired-up Concord team. In spite of a host of first-half turnovers, which left Panther fans shaking their heads over a 10-0 disadvantage after two quarters, Coach Rich Dodson’s gridders came out ready in the third, and made a contest of it after all. A pair of touchdowns, one each by Andy Roeder and Nate Andrews, and two good PAT kicks by Wes Dodson, was all it took to get the hosts their second straight win of the young season, and a possible No. 1 rating in Class 3A state polls when they come out this week. Dodson stated, “We survived. I told the kids-now you know why coaches have heart surgery. We did everything we shouldn’t do in the first half. Fortunately, we came back and responded in the second half.” Concord opened the scoring at 2:03 of the first quarter, when Calhoun went in from the 11, and Johnson booted a successful PAT. The Minutemen scored again in the second, on a 22-yard field goal by Johnson, at 6:50, and the Panther home win streak was in jeopardy. However, it was all North Wood in the second half, with senior QB Andy Roeder recovering from three first-half interceptions to lead the Panthers to the win. Roeder kept the ball eight times on option plays in that half totaling 76 yards, including a3l -yard TD run that brought the Panthers to within three points of the leaders. The score highlighted a 56-yard drive late in the third, with tailbacks Andrews and Chad Newcomer chomping away the yardage between North Wood and the goal line. In the final stanza, Andrews gave the Panthers uieir winning points off a two-yard scamper to paydirt. That 44-yard drive to score included three Rocder-keepers good for 25 yards. Concord had one final chance to pull out the win, but linebacker Matt Bunch tipped a Minutcman pass, with Andrews snagging the ball and setting up the clock-eating series for the home team. On the night, Roeder was the leading ground gainer with 75 yards on 8 keepers, followed by Andrews at 62 in 13, Newcomer at 58 in 15, and Bunch at 39 in 5. Roeder was good on 3-9 passes, hitting John Markham (18 yards), Andy Blosser (8) and Brad Baker (3) each once. Dan Rouch and Andrews each returned a punt for four yards, and Andrews, Bunch and Newcomer each returned a kickoff, for 17, 17 and 12 yards respectively. Newcomer punted once for 25 yards, and Sam Reschly kicked off once for 56. The Black Crunch defense was led by Tom Duncan with an impressive 13 tackles, followed by Brad Baker with 11 and Bunch and Reschly, each 8. Andrews had 6, to go along with the interception, with Newcomer and Adam Bontrager also totaling 6 hits. The Panthers sacked the visiting QB four times, with Bunch (1), Yoder (1), Geyer (1-1/2) and Reschly (1/2) doing the honors. The Panthers were guilty of two fumbles, losing both, and four pass interceptions. “We can’t afford to play like this in the NLC,” stated Dodson. “If we
