Tougher Drunk Driving Laws Needed (NAPS)—Continuing progress in fighting drunk driving requires adopting stronger anti-drunk driving laws in the states, according to experts at the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS). The spirits industry is proud of the progress America has made in reducing drunk driving over the past decade, but more must be done. To ensure that drunk driving keeps declining, DISCUS is drafting model legislation for every state legislature to consider: “The Drunk Driving Prevention Act.” “The Drunk Driving Prevention Act” includes five key provisions. First, mandatory alcohol education for drivers. Second, bans on open containers in motor vehicles. Third, Administrative License Revocation. Fourth, tough laws against underage drinking. And fifth, mandatory chemical tests of suspected drivers and in fatal crashes. These five key points are all proven methods. Where they have been used, these provisions work because they target the abuser, not the responsible user. To stop abusive behavior, the only way to do it is to hold the drunk driver directly responsible for his actions. Effectively fighting drunk driving requires working from a mindset that is antiabuse, not anti-alcohol. With “The Drunk Driving Prevention Act,” drivers know the penalties for abusive drinking, they are deterred from drunk driving, and drunk drivers are stopped by tough law enforcement.
