The Lost Word... Mr . Prescription for depression
by Laurie Lechlitner Have you ever been depressed? Thai’s a silly question, isn’t it? Even Pollyanna, who had the knack of looking on the bright side of things, got depressed from time to time. Being depressed is kind of like having a cold. Slight depression is the sniffles. Clinical depression can be as serious as pneumonia. Clinical depression is the type of depression that is long lasting. We need professional help to shake it. We develop an apathetic attitude, not caring whether we live or die when we have clinical depression. That’s very dangerous. It’s life threatening when we conterhplate suicide. Clinical depression is often tied with physical problems or a chemical imbalance. I do not have a prescription for clinical depression. But smaller skirmishes with depression are normal and sometimes helpful to our systems. Depression slows down our body and mind. After the Christmas rush, when our tinsel is stored away in the attic, we often feel a sadness. However, with the depression comes a chance for our body’s metabolism to slow and relaxation to take place. Sometimes we suffer from freefloating depression. We cannot pinpoint the exact reason for our sadness. This too can be a steppingstone to growth. It gives us a chance to do some soul searching. Have we squelched a disappointment? Are we living below our expectations of our own character developement? I have experienced this type of depression when I was not giving life my best shot. I have also experienced, free-floating depression when I tried to push back a disappointment or squelch a natural emotion. With this type of depression, it is always helpful to talk things out with a trusted friend or counselor. After the death of a loved one we feel depressed. This is part of our coping system that allows us to store memories, but temporarily let go of the hope of sharing our loved one’s physical presence. Notice 1 said “temporarily let go of the hope of being with our loved one.” I believe strongly in an afterlife. That belief has gotten me through many a bout with depression. A godly mother who has passed to the other side often has more influence on a wayward adult child than when she was alive. The child realizes that if he or she wants to spend an eternity in Heaven with mother he or she is going to have to shape up. 1 experienced depression after I have finished a goal that’s taken a great deal of time or energy. Sometimes it is a goal with which I am successful. Other times it is a goal or dream which I have to let go. This week was one of those times

that I had to let go of a dream. For nearly a year I have worked on a fiction manuscript with an editor of a magazine for teenagers. I had to rewrite the piece again and again. My specially is not writing for teens. I knew that before I started. But the editor thought we had a story. After a year of blood, sweat and tears on both of our parts, we found that I did not. This time, however, I decided to study my depression to learn from it. I have come to the conclusion that the common denominator in depression is our preoocupation with ourselves and our own problems. So the first part of my prescription for depression is to do one nice thing a day for somebody else. Pick something that will take some time and energy. I bought a housewarming gift for a new neighbor this week. I then spent some time listening to her struggles. When I was able to focus outward, I was able to see that I was not alone in the battles of life. My own sadness began to look insignificant as I zeroed in on someone else. Another activity that brought joy and laughter to my life was watching the birds take showers in the soakerhose. We have a soaker-hose that waters a line of tiny Spruce trees at the back of our lot I watch from the sliding-glass door as they line up to douse themselves, singing as they shake their feathers and hop around in circles. They look like miniature humans at a bathhouse. Only these bathers fly away after they are good and wet. \ Getting back to nature does a lot to shake away the blues. Planting a garden and watching new life appear gives us hope for tomorrow. I spotted a blue Robin’s egg on the ground that must have been pushed out of a nest of hatched baby birds. What a marvelous sight! Physical exercise is good for our self-esteem. A brisk walk or a halfmile run can make you feel like a new person. A bicycle ride gets the blood pumpin’. Making time for exercise is a great habit even on our good days. Last, but not least, we need to

watch our diet. Let’s face it, junk food makes a person feel junky. Some free-floating depression can be caused by an unhealthy diet. Small bouts with depression are normal. Everyone has experienced the blues on occasion. But we can do some things to help ourselves. My prescription for depression is four-fold: concentrate on the nee4s of others, get back to nature, get'qn an exercise routine, and develop & healthy diet t< y j A church that is not reaching out is passing out.
