Building a better community Foundation based on faith
By Merrie Chapman Staff Writer Freemon Borkholder is a man of great strength and wisdom. The success of his giant corporation, its expansion and his continious adjustments to life’s changes, are testimony to his inner stability. ; His most recent crisis came unexpectedly last November 11, while jfeinting the roof of a building he had purchased in Wakarusa. 'Tve been on thousands of roofs jn r my lifetime, but this time I s4pped,” says Borkholder, who fell through the structure’s ceiling. ' Suddenly, the independent entrepreneur who was often seen in the ; futniture factory before hours work- ■ Ing on his own projects, and who

was not above doing odd jobs (like painting), was laying helplessly in a hospital. He was told that his spinal cord had been severed and that he was paralyzed from the bottom of his rib cage through his feet. Both lungs had been punctured. Impressing the doctors and medical staff, Freemon progressed rapidly. By New Year’s Day he was released to his family for one day, and they all celebrated a belated Christmas holiday. That same month he was again released, this time for two days. January 28, with his family by his side, Borkholder celebrated his homecoming and began physical therapy three days a week. He says

the most difficult part of the whole ordeal was dealing with the loss of his independence-something he held very dear. But he says, “I’m happy to be alive.” Since that time Freemon continued his therapy every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning. He has developed his upper body muscles and can move easily in a wheelchair, which allows him to maneuver himself and participate in his business affairs. Following therapy this corporation leader heads back to Borkholder headquarters, US6 West, Nappanee, where an elevator and wider walkway have been added to accomodate him. On Tuesdays and Thursdays he works five to six hours. While they are not full work days, they are a great challenge to a man with physical limitations who lacks full lung capacity. While doctors do not expect Borkholder to walk again, he is not giving up hope. He believes in the power of prayer and miracles. Freemon knows that many family and friends pray every day for his health to be restored and he appreciates their fellowship. Borkholder is confident that he will experience total healing and walk again. But he says, “it may not be in this life on earth.” Freemon’s Christian faith has shaped his good character which leads his giant corporationincluding Borkholder Buildings, Dutch Village, Building Supply, Truss Manufacturers, American Vintage Furniture, and Country Furniture Store. The empire began in 1962 with Borkholder Buildings which grew rapidly to include 47 building crews and 25 salespeople. They serviced four states, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois. With the growth, departments individualized and the Building Supply and Truss Manufacturer plants were recognized independently. Borkholder American Vintage Furniture manufacturing and the

Country Store were started 12 years ago. And the corporation grew nationwide. Dutch Village followed five years later. It started with a large Auction House and expanded to include first an antique building, then two arts and crafts sections and finally a bakery. Currently, the Dutch Village has more dealers than ever before in both the antique and craft sections. Freemon’s accomplishments did not stop there. He continued to be a valued assett to the community. With the best interest of his neighbors in mind, Borkholder began plans to build the Heritage Medical Center which is currently finishing its first year of business. The business executive says he looks forward to working with medical center until it is fully staffed. The physically impaired entrepreneur says, “I feel very strong about staying in management,” and takes pride in remaining a strong and active part of his corporation. In accordance with his expansion plans, the truss plant will double its current size and add new equipment in the near future. He would also like to see the lumber yard and fumture factory grow. Personal goals that Freemon has set for himself include the future purchase of a customized van to allow him driving accessibility. He looks forward to the independence he will gain with an automobile at his disposal. With the help of the new van, Freemon hopes to attend a furniture show this October in High Point, North Carolina. Working toward recov-ery-overseeing both everyday business, as well as future expansions...and working with the Heritage Medical Center and other community-oriented projects...AU are very ambitious challenges individually. Together they are a pretty tall order. After having come this far, the future is still unwritten for this very determined man of strongcharacter.
