Wakarusa Chamber of Commerce
Doing what’s best... Director hard at work
By Barb Keiser Editor Nappanee has a new No. 1 fan, and it’s Mike McCauley, appointed executive director for the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce on February 15. With just over a month’s worth of service in his new leadership role, McCauley states that his first priority is to the chamber members, including finding out what they need, “from parking spaces to customers, and market areas to other chamber resources,” and keeping them informed, via newsletters and regular get-togethers. He feels Nappanee’s strength lies in the community’s ability to maintain its small-town character while meeting the needs of the 90s. “We have some of the finest manufacturing facilities anywhere, strong retail, and the charm of yesterday in the horse and buggy,” he stated. He continued by citing Main & Market Street, and credited Dree tor Larry Andrews and his staff for their efforts to “put Nappanee on the map.” McCauley, who meets with Andrews on a regular basis, feels M&M has done a remarkable job, and emphasizes that the chamber’s relationship with that organization is great. The two units plan to continue to work hand-in-hand in serving the community of Nappanee and the chamber’s members. His first month with the chamber has been a busy one, with McCauley in town almost every day, to visit retailers, clubs, businesses and industries, and to spearhead the current membership drive, which winds down soon. The director estimated the membership to be approximately 125, and considers it one of his top priorities to “grow the membership at a reasonable rate.” Growing that total includes informing potential members of the benefits of joining the chamber, with many asking, “What do I get for my investment?” He responds by telling them that the chamber offers informative forums and seminars, market information, has access to extensive resources, and addresses specific needs of its members, as presented. McCauley, who has had 12 years of marketing and sales experience, saved as a member of the Bay Area Chamber in Michigan, and acted as a national recruiter for Jaycees, has resided in Syracuse since 1987, but does not consider that a hindrance to saving the Nappanee community. “I want to do what’s best for Nappanee,” he emphasized, stating that he is still seeking to familiarize

Chamber 'hub' Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mike McCauley checks his schedule with Carol Miller, who staffs the office four days a week. McCauley and Miller provide the hub for the chamber "spokes,” working to benefit the 125-member organization, while providing Information to companies and individuals who want to know the advantages of living, locating, and/or visiting the Nappanee community. himself with “where everything is,” and working to regulate chamber office hours. Carol Miller, whom McCauley praises for her work with the chamber, is in the office all day Monday through Wednesday, and until noon on Thursday. From Thursday noon and throughout Friday, a staff of volunteers works to handle phone call inquiries, mailings and visits. In addition, the office will be open on Saturdays through the summer season, to accomodate tourists and others seeking information about the community. McCauley also mentioned the fact that he is very impressed with the work of Dick Pletcher and Freemon Borkholder, and their many contributions to Nappanee. “Dick has done so mudi to bring people into the community, and with securing grant monies, and Freemon can’t be thanked enough for what he has done.” "Have you seen the new Heritage Medical Center?” he asked, continuing, "I am very impressed with that gorgeous facility, and the specialists who are being brought there for the benefit of Nappanee. In addition, the lobby area will be available for special meetings and classes.” McCauley has become familiarized with the inner workings of the local chamber, and has visited the mayor and learned about the various city departments. In addition he continues to broaden his knowledge of retail, industrial and economic opportunities, and has spoken to a number of groups, including Kiwanis, other area chamber groups, credit unions and boards. He smiled, “I will speak to anyone who will listen to my terrible jokes.” Considering that 80% of his job is to take care of chamber members, McCauley reported that one area he needs to work with is the municipal airport, finding out more about its capabilities and possibilities, especially in the areas of landing corporate aircraft. He also intends to reinstate the publication of a regular monthly chamber newsletter, including items of special interest about members, and plans to organize some sort of monthly breakfast meeting or other gathering of chamber members for sharing information. “But we don’t want to burden people with unnecessary meetings. ’’Out retailers seem to be doing well,” he stated, singling out Metzler Shoes and Store Next Door as a popular “down-home-type” shoestore that offers a special charm to its customers. “We need to focus on

what’s here, so people who live here will want to stay here.” McCauley closed by mentioning that it is expected that Elkhart County’s population will increase by 30% over the next several years, and officials will have to address attracting qualified and quality employees for growing businesses and industry, as well as to meet housing needs. He considers the chamber to be a facilitator for its members, and plans to continue to pour his energies into helping Nappanee maintain its charm of yesterday, while keeping pace with today’s needs. McCauley has a charming personality, and that, combined with his enthusiasm, knowledge, and willingness to work with the community, are bound to be contagious. Residents can expect to see positive results from his efforts. Keep your focus on Nappanee—and watch what happens!
