NPD make arrests ; n ongoing case

throwing two bags onto a roof in an alley. The caller gave a description of die boys and their car. Police responded to the area and found the vehicle and one suspect. After speaking to the male subject police learned that the items thrown on the roof were stolen from vehicles on previous occasions. The male was held for questioning and after the items were recovered a second male subject was picked up for questioning.

Both were arrested on three counts of felony theft. One suspect was a 17-year-old male juvenile from Nappanee. Also arrested was Marlen Lee Bontrager, 18, 829 Bokahara Place, Sarasota, Florida. Bontrager was held in the Elkhart County Security Center with no bond. The juvenile was released to his parents’ custody on a promise to appear. Officers involved in the case included Ptl. Douglas E. Weaver, Sgt. Michael Anglin, Ptl. Tim Stouder and Reserve Ptl. Tom Shields. At the time of the arrest the NPD announced that the investigations on the thefts were still underway and future charges and arrests could occur. THEFT FROM AUTO Tuesday, August 3, 8:54a.m„ a subject visiting her mother encountered a 14-year-old male exiting her car as she approached it to leave the residence. The juvenile hads eight cassette tapes from her car in his possession. The subject was placed under arrest and released to his guardian until a court date could be set. SEXUAL BATTERY Monday, August 2, Albro Smith, 55,4869 Filbert Road, Bremen, was arrested by Nappanee Police Officers on a warrant for residential entry and sexual battery. The warrant was issued following an investigation into an incident that took place in Nappanee in May. Mr. Smith was incarcerated in the Elkhart County Jail on a bond of 54,000 and scheduled to appear in Elkhart Superior Court. Arresting officers were Sgt. Mike Anglin and Ptl. Tim Stoudcr. CONVERSION August 2,7:38p.m., the NPD was called to the Val Store parking lot, on the east end of Nappanee, to meet with an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department off-duty deputy. Upon arrival it was found that three subjects were invovled in taking a pack of cigarettes from Family Fare. Two of the three were still present when the Nappanee Police Department arrived. The

The Nappanee High School Class of 1948 held its 45-year reunion, Saturday, July 24, at the United Methodist Church, Nappanee. Included in the celebration were dinner and a program. Phil Hahn 11, Ptl. Bruce Balasa and Reserve Ptl. Matt Gieger. RESISTING LAW ENFORCEMENT August 4, at approximately 10:17p.m., 18-year-old Chedric D. Wright, address unknown, was arrested by Nappanee Police Officers for disorderly conduct. The charges were made after Wright was observed directing fowl language towards a uniformed NPD officer in a marked squad car at Stauffer Park. Additional charges of resisting arrest were added at the police station when the suspect would not identify himself and continued to use abusive language towards officers. He was later taken to the Elkhart County Security Center and held on a 51,500 bond. A court date was set for August 13, 6p.m.. Officers invovled in the arrest included Ptl. Phil Hahn lI.Cpl. Dana Hollar and Reserve Ptl. Matt Geiger. PUBLIC INTOXICATION Thursday, August 5, 1:35a.m„ David E. Mesich, 40, 5520 Melton Road, Portage, was arrested by Cpl. Tom Rouch after the officer found him sleeping in his pickup truck in the drive between Pantry Plus and Northern Pride Car Wash. The officers had slopped to investigate Mesich’s parked vehicle. The suspect was transported to the police station and released after being booked on charges of public intoxication. He is scheduled to appear in Nappanee City Court

Friday, August 13, 6p.m.. MARIJUANA POSSESSION August 6, Ptl. Darrell Hartzler was advised by a concerned citizen that two men were setting in the parking lot at PJ’s Sports Bar and were smoking marijuana. After investigating the complaint, the officer found that Steven Cook, 23, Bremen, and Steven Taylor, 24, Bourbon- the two occupants of the vehicle-had been smoking and were in possession of a small amount of marijuana. The pair were booked on charges of possession of marijuana and held at the Elkhart County Jail on bonds of SI,OOO each. PUBLIC INTOXICATION August 6, the NPD received a call in referance to a male subject in an alley in the 100 block of South Main Street, causing an unknown problem. Officers arrived in the area and found Gregory Wright, 29, 224 North Center Street, Bremen. After speaking with the person who made the original complaint, it was found that Gregory Wright had been arguing with a female subject in the alley. When asked to stop by a nearby resident, Wright threatened that subject and shoved him away. At that time the police were contacted. Wright was found to be under the influence of alcohol and in an intoxicated state. He was arrested for public intoxication. The - subject was processed at the NPD and transported to the Elkhart County Security Center in lieu of a SSOO bond. Arresting officers were Ptl. Douglas E. Weaver and Ptl. Tim Stoudcr. HABITUAL OFFENDER August 7, NPD officers saw a

vehicle commit a traffic violation at the intersection of US6 and SRI9. The vehicle was stopped and the officers noticed that the driver, 22-year-old Stoney E. Gawthrop, 930 South Jackson Street, Apartment 48, Nappanee, appeared to be intoxicated. The driver first gave false information about himself. Once the officers found out the truth, a check of his driving record was done. It was learned that Gawthrop had previous driving while intoxicated convictions and that he was an habitual traffic violator. The man was arrested on both felony charges (DWI and HTV Life) and detained at the Elkhart County Jail pending a probable cause hearing scheduled for August 7. WARRANT ARREST Robert L. Poe, 29, 1319 Concord Avenue, Elkhart, was arrested in Nappanee on the morning of August 7 after officers found there was a warrant for his arrest. The warrant was out of Elkhart County for charges of possession of marijuana. Poe was located while officers were doing a routine check on an intoxicated subject. He was held without bond by order of the warrant. Stamp Club to meet The Ben Franklin Stamp Club will meet in the Enos Borkholder meeting room at the Nappanee Public Library, Saturday, August 14, 10a.m. Dr. Forest Kendall, a local collector who is responsible for organization of the club, leads discussions concerning tips for new stamp collectors. Anyone grade three through adult, with an interest in stamp collecting and trading is invited to attend. Participants will learn more about stamps and stamp collecting. Activities include games and prizes. The club meets the second Saturday pf each month at 10a.m., in the library.
