:>:Pmil L. Dieterien, 39, is running for m at-large seat on the Wa-Nee School Board. Dieterien’s family includes wife Janet and three children who graduated from Northwood High School: Jeff, a graduate of Purdue University, who is married; Laurie, 4m Indiana University grad who is also married; and Susan, a freshman at Purdue University. Mr. Dieterien is a graduate of Ambia High School, Ohio State University, and the College of Veterinary Medicine. After completing his education Dieterien served as a veterinarian for 33 years, 33 of which he was in private practice in Nappanee. Since January 1991 he has been employed as a public health veterinarian by the state of Indiana. His community service record includes: serving as financial chairman, building committee member and vice-chairman for the board of trustees for the United Methodist Church, Nappanee; 33 years of membership to the Kiwanis Club, during which time he held all offices and numerous committee chairs; serving as the advisory committee to the NoithWood agriculture teacher for 30 years; Music Boosters president and active member for 12 years. Volunteers honored at Nappanee library
Volunteers who together have contributed over 1,644 hours of service to the community jhis past year, through various programs at the Nappanee Public Library, will be honored during a special program at the library, Friday, May 1,7:30p.m. All who have helped with 1992 National Library Week celebrations will also be guests of the library board of trustees and staff. The theme for the evening will be “Volunteers: a Symphony of Service.” According to Linda Yoder, library director, “A symphony is characterized by a harmonious combination of elements that together create an extraordinary whole. We feel that the Nappanee Public Library volunteers and those who so often help with our special projects during National Library Week, represent a very special blending of components that together resonate a symphony of services and resources for our community.” Currently 12 volunteers work on a regular basis in the main library, helping with numerous projects,

including shelving, processing new and withdrawing old or discarded materials, typing and filing, and assisting with mailings and other special projects. Six volunteers serve as tutors in the Nappanee Volunteers for Literacy program, and an additional 23 volunteers staff the Heritage Center from l-4p.m. each weekday, and from 10a.m.-2p.m. on Saturdays. Guests on Friday will be treated to a musical program by solo harpist Beth Pare, and a dessert bar by local caterers. April 26-May 2 is National Volunteer Week. Anyone interested in learning more about the volunteer program at the Nappanee Public Library is encouraged to call the library, at 773-7919.

Phil Hochsteder, 204 W. Reed Sl, is a 19-year veteran with the Nappanee Fire Department. He and his wife, Pat, have two sons: Phillip, Jr. and Dirk, and five grandchildren. He has served the department as treasurer, assistant chief, first captain and second captain. Phil’s most memorable experience as a Smokey Stover occurred at the church fire on CR46, when the temperature was -15 degrees. When the fire was out, Chief Gene Henschen and Hochsteder were standing inside when the floor collapsed and Henschen fell into the basement. Phil stated, “Luckily he was not injured, but it gave all the firemen some anxious moments.” Hochsteder also serves the City of Nappanee as Wastewater Treatment Plant Supt., taking regular classes to keep up with current techniques applying to his position. YEARS AGO On May 27,1886, a meeting was called in Nappanee, to organize a hook and ladder company. Holman created tbe “Smokey Stover” comic strip about firemen in 1936, and the strip ran for 43 years. Holman gave the Nappanee Fire Department permission to use the Smokey Stover logo on trucks, etc., and to adopt the name “Smokey Stovers” for the department. Holman, originally from Nappanee, died February 27, 1987, in New York, at age 84.

The next school board meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 11, 7:30p.m., Wa-Nee Administration Building. Meetings are open to the public. ‘Day of Prayer’ Nappanee Mayor Kenneth Walters has issued a proclamation stating that May 7,1992, will be officially recognized as a “Day of Prayer” m Nappanee. Mayor Walters, as well as the Nappanee Ministerial Association, support this important day by inviting the public to “Meet at City Hall,” May 7, 12:20p.m., to pray for the nation. “Meet at City Hall” is a project for special prayer for a moral rebirth in America. Americans are asked to gather at their local city hall on that day, and pray from 12:20-12:40p.m. “Meet at City Hall” is not a political event. It is a project for special prayer. Every community in the United States is being invited to participate in this special observance. Local persons are encouraged to participate in this call for prayerplease plan now to attend. The Nappanee Municipal Center is located at 300 W. Lincoln St The mayor’s proclamation follows: WHEREAS, May 7, 1992 has been designated as National Day of Prayer and; WHEREAS, Many people in the City of Nappanee and surrounding area support the importance of prayer and; WHEREAS, There is a national effort urging individuals to “MEET AT CITY HALL” on that day for prayer and; WHEREAS, We recognize that there is need for a moral rebirth of our nation; NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Kenneth Walters, do hereby declare that May 7,1992, shall be observed as a Special Day of Prayer in Nappanee, and that on said day from 12:20PM to 12:40PM there shall be a gathering at City Hall for purposes of silent prayer, for a moral rebirth for America.
