Turnovers fatal to Panthers
A total of 47 turnovers in two weekend contests spelled doom for the North Wood varsity Panthers, as they lost to the highly-rated Warsaw Tigers Friday, 91-43, and to John Glenn’s Falcons Saturday, 77-63. Both games were played in the Panther Pit. North Wood started out strong in the opening stanza of Friday’s contest, scoring the first two baskets, and leading 12-8 heading into the final two minutes of the period. By the quarter, however, the stronger Tigers had taken a 13-12 edge, and never looked back. It was 41-22 at the halfway mark, and 62-32 after three. In the second quarter, pressure from the visitors caused 10 turnovers by the Panthers. “We worked really hard on handling defensive pressure this week,” reported Coach Kern Bough. "It would have been a real milestone to keep our turnovers down, but that didn’t happen.” “Someone asked me if they’re the quickest Warsaw team I’ve seen,” contunucd Bough. ’They were awful quick and very good. Everybody knows they’re well coached. Their talents are always used extremely well.” North Wood senior center Craig Bush led the Panther attack with 16 Kints and eight rebounds, while Nic ivis added six points and four rebounds and Fred Lechlitner had six points. The Tigers were led by Jason McKenzie, who sizzled the nets for 30 points, a career high, and by Dan Elliott, who contributed 26, including 5-8 from three-point range. North Wood went 3-8 from long range, with Evers, Metz and Lechlitner each nailing one. The win gives Warsaw a 4-0 conference mark, while the Panthers fell to 0-3. AGAINST GLENN In Saturday’s contest, visiting John Glenn jumped out to a 22-16 first-quarter lead, and hung on at all stops for the 14-point edge at the buzzer. The Falcons connected on eight from three-point range to help their own cause, and Kevin Stedman and

In the championship round, Mullet won by 15-8 decision; Bonacorsi lost by pin at 1:27; Croy won by 10-2 decision, and Kulp won by pin at 4:37. A loss from Wawasee, a win over Warsaw, and several outstanding performances from individuals during the past two weekends. Our schedule this season is tough, beginning with our second super dual. We have wrestled against some of the top teams in the state. The competition is making our kids bcuer-they have to get better or they won’t iast long on the mat! The competition should better prepare us for the state tournament series.” North Wood sports a 12-6 team record (2-2 in NLQ. The Panthers compete in the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament, Saturday, January 25, 9a.m., at Concord.
Jason Groves combined for 37 points to lead the scoring attack. Bush once again led the Panthers, scoring 17 points and grabbing a team-high five rebounds. Hirschy was also in double figures with 10. North Wood out-rebounded Glenn 28-20, and turned the ball over 21 times, to 13 for the Falcons.

JV cagers upset Warsaw
The Panther junior varsity upset previously-undefeated Warsaw Friday night at the Panther Pit, shocking the Tigers with a 41-34 win. North Wood led at the first stop, 12-9, and at the halfway mark, 25-16. The Tigers outscored their hosts 15-9 in the fourth, but the Panthers held on for the victory. Brad Hartman and Don Dyck led the scoring effort with 13 points each, including six each from the charity stripe. Kirby Reinhardt was a force on the board, hauling down a gamehigh 10 rebounds, while Fred Lechlitner collected four. Both overcame injuries to contribute to the win. Harold Reynolds had three steals to go along with three assists, and Reinhardt added two assists and three steals. Saturday evening, the JV was JV hosts invitational North Wood High School hosted its own JV wrestling invitational Saturday, with teams competing from Elkhart Memorial, Northridge, Concord, Elkhart Central, Goshen, Jimtown, Plymouth, Rochester, South Bend Clay and Whitko, in addition to the host Panthers. No team scores were kept. Swimmers fall to Warsaw North Wood’s swim record fell to 3-7 last week, following a 102-82 home loss to Warsaw. The Panthers recorded a total of four personal bests in the meet. The 200-yard medley relay team of Scott Bowers, Jeremy Martin, Scott Smith and Brian Boothe finished third, while teammates Silas Jessup, Adam Bontrager, Josh Miller and Tim Miller placed fifth. Phil Buckles, Adam Honeycutt and Adam Bontrager finished second, third and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, while Jeremy Martin and Scott Smith finished second and third in the 200-yard individual medley. Bowers won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.47, with Boothe placing second and Ralph Lantz fourth. Shipley and Jessup placed third and fourth respectively in the diving event. Bowers also won the 100-yard butterfly, in 102.13, with Smith finishing fourth. , Shipley placed first in the 100-yard freestyle, at 59.35, with Honeycutt reconling a personal best to place second, and Lantz finishing third. Martin and Josh Miller finished first and second in the 500-yard freestyle, with Martin’s winning time clocked at 613.45. Miller also recorded a personal best The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Boothe, Honeycutt, Buckles and Bowers finished second, while the team of Shipley, Jessup, Lantz and Martin was third. John Miller finished third in the 100-yard backstroke, and Boothe was fifth, while Buckles, Bontrager and Jessup (personal best) placed fourth, fifth and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke. The final event, 400-yard freestyle relay, found the Panther team of Honeycutt, Lantz, Shipley and Smith placing second, and the team of Miller, Miller, Bontrager and Buckles placing fifth. North Wood will host East Noble Thursday, January 23, and travels to LaSalle Tuesday, January 28. Both meets begin at 6:30p.m. meet.

Eight turnovers by six different Panthers limited the Panther offense to just five shots in the final quarter, with just two points scored, enabling the visitors to eke out the win.
Memorial swims by NW
The North Wood High School boys’ swim team fell to Elkhart Memorial last week, 133-51, but Panther swimmers recorded a total of five personal bests in the meet. North Wood is 3-6 on the season. Panther 200 medley relay teams finished third and fourth. Team members include Scott Bowers, J.R. Martin, Scott Smith and Brian Boothe, on the third-place team, and Adam Bontrager, Tim Miller, Josh Miller and Silas Jessup on the other squad. Phil Buckles finished second in the 200 free style, with teammates Adam Honeycutt (personal best) and Adam Bontrager placing fifth and sixth respectively. Jeremy Martin placed third in the 200 individual medley, with a personal best time, while Scott Smith was fourth. In the 50 free style, Scott Bowers won with a time of .2456, while Panthers Brian Boothe and Silas Jessup placed fifth and sixth, both with personal best limes. Glenn Shipley finished third and Jessup fourth in diving, while Josh Miller and Scott Smith placed third and fourth in the 100 butterfly. Glen Shipley, Adam Honeycutt and Ralph Lantz placed fourth, fifth and sixth in the fOO freestyle, and Panthers Josh Miller and Phil Buckles were second and fourth in the 500 freestyle. Doors will open at 9a.m. and the first game will start at 9:30a.m.. Teams participating include Mishawaka, Michigan City Elston, South Central and the hosting Panthers. Admission will be $2.50 for an adult single session ticket, and $1.50 for a students entry to one game. Season tickets will be $4 for adults and $2 for students. A trophy will be presented to the championship team. A most valuable player award will also be presented, along with first and second place ribbons. South Central will challenge North Wood in the first game. Mishawaka will then play Michigan City Elston at approximately 11:15a.m.. The winning teams of each match will square off in a championship game around 4p.m., for the trophy. The two loosing teams of the morning games will play a consolation game.
