; This feature on the North Wood ;High School business department continues a series on the high School’s academic offerings. "I Drive A? Drive Bv Drive C? Change Directories? Start the Program? Spin; whir, beep; beep-are the : sounds of another day beginning in the business department at North- ; Wood High School. Is life easier or more complicated because of computers? It doesn’t • matter in today’s society; we have to Iget used to the presence of the ; computer. Tne business department ; tries to provide some answers. By offering a variety of computer : classes, and integrating the computer into other applicable situations, students will be able to face the job market with some computer competency. How does this happen? Anyone taking a tour of the department throughout the day would see students using the computers at all hours. The day begins as students in the Lotus 1-2-3 class (a computer software program) work on spreadsheets containing formulas, databases, macros, or graphs Each student is challenged to develop an individual project that will emulate a future use in the business world. “Be sure to save your document before you print,” instructs Mr. Roger Troyer, as his keyboarding class works on keying information in the new 16-station computer la'o. Police 10g... December 31, approximately 4:46p.m., Darrell E. Plymale, age 41,312 West Main Street, Mentone, was stopped for erratic driving in the 900 block of North Main Street, Nappanee. A strong odor associated with an alcoholic beverage was detected on his person. After failing a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer test, by registering a BAC of .24%, he was arrested for driving while intoxicated and incarcerated in the Elkhart County Jail. Bond was set at SI,OOO. His court date is set for Wednesday, January 8, in Nappanee City Coin.

check your documents with the speller and proofread them before you turn them in.” The integrated office practice class utilizes the computers in their transcription, duplication, and office simulation requirements. Later in the day, a visitor would find several word processing classes being instructed to “clear your screens and go on to the next sorting exercise.” Mr. Jim Snider’s personal word processing classes are developing the skill needed to complete papers for the English department: creating multi-page reports or alphabetizing lists according to certain criteria. Mr. Bryan Carter’s accounting class will be told to “check your accounts receivable to make sure the computer has all your entries posted.” As students work through a computer-generated accounting simulation, the practicality of the computer is demonstrated. An observer might even find Mr. Brad Navis (a student teacher this fall) working with his general business students on a banking simulation. This experience gives “hands on” application of computing check registers, finding check-writing errors, or even comparing balances to prepared budgets. By offering five different classes directly using computers, and two others using simulation capabilities, the North Wood High School Business Department tries to teach for

'Preventing Burnout' “Preventing Burnout” is a class offered by Oaklawn, January 13, 7p.m., Oaklawn Hospital, 330 Lakeview Drive, Goshen. People whose work involves helping others-teachers, nurses, homemakers, secretaries, supervisors, sales people, caseworker, pastors-can “bum out” They give so much of their time, energy and emotions to others or to their work that they feel drained-like they have no more to give. The results can be pom* health, poor quality work, and high turnover in jobs. The problems of burnout will be examined by Dominic Vachon, psychology intern at Oaklawn. He will discuss the causes and dynamics of burnout and give specific, practical techniques for preventing it. Fee for the class is $7.
