'Bough’s crew’ earns tournament title

In first round action at the super dual, North Wood outscorcd Fairfield 53-8. Second round, Panthers 45, Northridge 22; third round, North Wood 26, Noblesville 40; fourth round, Panthers drew bye; fifth round, North Wood 22, East Noble 39. In the sixth round, North Wood lost to Eastside 21-43; seventh, Panthers topped Lakeland 37-27, and eighth, North Wood 27, Delta 44. JV RESULTS In the Adams Central Junior Varsity Tournament, North Wood crowned the following place finishers: Justin Detwilcr, 171, second; Tony Gilley, 189, fourth; Andy Culp, 135, fifth; Tony Fish, 130, seventh. Team scores were as follows: Bcllmonl 196, Huntington 173-1/2, Snider 146-1/2, Bishop Dwengcr 143, Adams Central 127-1/2, Wabash 88-1/2, Jimtown 65-1/2, North Wood 55-1/2, Muncie South 38, Harding 37-1/2, Jay County 36. A total of 32 teams were entered in the Mishawaka Invitational, held December 27-28. No results were available at presstime.

Miller hits 1000 JoAnn Miller, daughter of A1 and Lydia Miller, Nappanee, and a graduate of North Wood High School, recently scored her 1000th point as a member of the Huntington College women’s basketball squad. The milestone came against Purdue Calument, when Jo, who needed 28 points, scored exactly that in the December 20 contest. Miller leads the 5-5 Huntington team in scoring with a 20.8 average. The junior is also leading the team in assists, at 3.8 per game.

How to report results Coaches are reminded that, in order for the Nappanee Advance-News to publish your team’s results, statistics must be filed with the Advance-News office by Monday noon. The Advance-News has boxes at both the Nappanee Middle School and North Wood High School. Results may be placed in the boxes, or turned in at the newspaper’s office. It is not necessary that you turn in a completed story—but box scores, meet results, names of record-setting performances, coaches’ comments, etc., are helpful. Ben Snyder was also in double figures for North Wood, totaling 10 points off the bench, while Metz scored six in relief. Fairfield was led by Nick Bontreger with 15 points, and Brodie Garber with 10. The Panthers nailed 4-8 from three-point range, with Hirschy going 1-3, Jeff Schrock 1-2 and Snyder 2-3. North Wood committed 11 turnovers, to 15 for the Falcons. TITLE CONTEST Northridge’s upset of Goshen set up the Panther-Raider re-match. In the Panther home opener of the 1991 season, the visitors outshot their hosts to win it going away, 97-76. Saturday, however, North Wood got a clutch free throw from Evers with just two seconds to play to clinch the title. “This is really sweet,” stated Bough. “This is obviously significant for this team. This is going to be a happy new year. We kept holding on and kept holding on and we did it” The game was tight throughout, with the first quarter finding the Panthers out front by two, 12-10. Northridge outscored Bough’s crew in the second, 18-12, to take a slim 28-24 halftime lead. The third quarter found the Panthers on top 19-14, for a 43-42 North Wood edge, and the final period was be at 7-7, but the Panthers had enough to eke out the win and earn the crown. Part of the victory was attributed to the defensive play of Nic Davis and Andy Hirschy, who served as “chasers” for the Northridge sharpshooting duo of Brian Hiatt and Von Oxenrider. North Wood varsity basketball coach, Kern Bough, has announced that this week’s player of the week award will be shared by the entire team. The award is given to the entire squad for the team effort in winning the' Goshen Holiday Tournament. The Panthers defeated Fairfield 77-57 Friday night, to set up a rematch with the Northridge Raiders. The Panthers defeated Northridge 50-49, by playing ‘‘great team defense and playing unselfishly on offense,” according to Bough. He continues, “This championship is the result of a total team effort Each member of the squad contributed in some way to our success. “Our success in the tourney proves that faith and persistence always pay off. Our North Wood kids have never stopped believing that they could be successful and win championships. “As I have said many times, North Wood kids are special. They are made of great stuff. This championship proves that they are very special.”
