Drug awareness group hears 'Red Ribbon' plans
The Wa-Ncc Drug Awareness Committee met September 12, at Come-N-Dine Restaurant in Wakarusa, with Rob Stahly, Concord High School, visiting to discuss the “Suds Program.” The commiuce was encouraged to develop the program, with the backing of the local police department and community volunteers. Further information will be provided as the committee makes its decision. New members welcomed to the committee included Jean Blad, representing North Wood High School; Caryn Hershberger, middle schools; Becky Lehman, parents; Carolyn Miller, elementary schools; Rev. Michael Smith, ministerial associations; Roy Williams, industry, and Jim Yeager, middle schools. Red Ribbon Week cochairpersons Joyce Hartman and Becky Lehman outlined plans for

Watch for complete details. A special fund-raiser will also take place in connection with Red Ribbon Week. Red bows will be offered to individuals and businesses for $4 cach--lor display during the week. It was decided to print 1,000 WaNee drug awareness brochures, with updated information. There will also be resource cards printed for distribution. The next meeting of the committee will take place Wednesday, October 10, with the time and location to be announced.

Council Cont. from Pg. 1 the center. In September, Elder Haus took a tour of Oliver Mansion in South Bend, followed by a lunch at Tippecanoe Place. In his report to the council, Police Chief John Elliott noted that his department is accepting applications to fill two positions available. On October 10, at 7:00p.m„ in the municipal building, a test will be administered. Those individuals who are interested must be at least 21 years old and have a high school diploma. Street Department Superintendent Jeff Kern submitted his department’s report for the month of September to the council, including a rather large newspaper pickup and the final large size trash pickup for the year, with over 200 slops. Additionally, the Street Department built new signs for the recyclable aluminum bin and put in a second bin in the Family Fare parking lot. Included in Nappanee E.M.S. Director Mike Stull’s report to the council, a total of 35 calls were listed, bringing the total for the year up to 318. The Nappanee Fire Department will be joining in the festivities for a special Fire Station Week, allowing about 800 school children to tour the fire station on Wednesday and Thursday. Also, fire trucks from the area will be at McDonalds on Saturday. The next meeting of the Nappanee Common Council will be held on October 15, at 7:00p.m., in the council chambers at the municipal building. The public is invited to attend. Applications for openings The Nappanee Police Department will be taking applications for openings in the department. The applications may be picked up at the department any time. Two positions must be filled by January 1, 1991. A written test will be given on October 10, at 7:00p.m., at the Nappanee Police Department. Applications may be filled out before that time or that evening. Garage sale signs It is recommended that persons holding garage sales ask permission first before putting signs in other people’s yards. Once the garage sale is over, make sure you go back and remove the signs. License branch closed To allow branch personnel to enjoy a three day holiday weekend, all license branches will be closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday, October 6,7 and 8. Those branches normally open on Saturday are rescheduling the Saturday hours this week.

Amtrak inaugural train to arrive in Nappanee
The inaugural train of Amtrak’s relocated Broadway Limited passenger service will arrive amid planned festivities in Nappanee, on Wednesday, November 7, at 9:00a.m., from Chicago on its schedule to Garrett, Fostoria, Akron and Youngstown, Ohio, before arriving in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, at 7:30p.m. The special train will herald the return of passenger service to Nappanee which began in 1874, when the B & O tracks were laid, and continued for over 80 years. After breaking the welcome banner, the twin Amtrak engines will come to a halt at the newly constructed platform in front of the old station. It will be greeted by red, while and blue bunting marking the occasion, a tent Tilled with Amtrak souvenirs and registration for door prizes which include two Amtrak

The first Apple Festival parade was well worth the wait. Visitors from around the surrounding area lined Market Street to see floats politicians, horse drawn (and cow drawn) vehicles. Many of the antique tractors that were on display at L.J. Wagners found their way into the parade. The parade entrees were judged for originality, costume and dress and appearance. A brief ceremony will feature Mayor Robert Callander and other officials welcoming the train’s return to Nappanee. The NorthWood High School Band will salute the train at the junction of the railroad tracks and Nappanec’s Main Street. A contingent of Nappanee citizenry will be guests of Amtrak on the train between Nappanee and Garrett. Many of the guests joining the dignitaries will be chosen by a drawing from the names registered at the Nappanee Advance News. Winners of these tickets will be drawn at noon on October 22, and notified by the Chamber of Commerce. Nearly 80 seats will be available. The chamber is coordinating the celebration with the City
of Nappanee and the Nappanee Development Corporation. Regular Broadway Limited service will begin daily Sunday, November 11, with the first east bound train #4l arriving in Nappanee at 11:02p.m., and the first west bound main #4O departing Nappanee at 8:14a.m., on Monday, November 12, and arriving at Chicago’s Union Station at 9:29a.m. Union Station is the largest passenger station in the United States and is now under restoration. The published one way fare between Nappanee and Chicago is s2l. Connecting rail service to O’Hare International Airport is two blocks from the station. Broadway Limited trains feature dining, baggage and sleeper cars, in addition to non-smoking, first class and reserved seating arrangements. Tickets will be available on the trains; however, many trains will run at capacity through Nappanee and Amtrak suggests you contact your travel agent or any Amtrak ticket office for advance reservations. Tickets may be purchased now for future dates. Realty sign warning Persons should note that really signs arc not be moved or stolen from their locations in front of properties. If individuals are caught removing realty signs, they will be prosecuted. Leave the signs where they are and make this Halloween a good one.
