Memorial is victim #2
Elkhart Memorial became victim number two of both the JV and varsity girls’ basketball teams, as the younger Panthers set the November 21 pace with a 31-28 win, followed by a 58-43 varsity victory. In the JV contest, Annisa Blosscr led the scoring with 14 points for the Panthers, who netted their second straight win against no losses in the young season. In the varsity game, Angela Swanson exploded for 19 points to pace the Panthers, while Heather Smith was also in double figures with 13. Sharon Brotherton led the Memorial attack with 13 points. North Wood led at the first stop 15-9, and held a 31-23 lead at the half. It was 44-33 at the third break, and the Panthers coasted to their second straight win of the season. Frosh open with wins over Clay, Warsaw
North Wood’s freshman girls’ basketball team has opened its season with victories over South Bend Clay, 45-18, and Warsaw, 24-19. In the November 16 win over Clay, the Panthers were led by Missy Bemiller, with 14 points, eight rebounds, five steals and two assists, Bulldogs win Nappanec Middle School’s seventh grade basketball team opened its season at Bremen, winning the contest 28-18. In spite of the fact that the Lions were playing their fourth game of the season, the Bulldog defense and rebounding proved to be too much for them to handle. Nappance was ahead the entire game, with quarter scores reading 4-0, 12-4, 18-8 and 28-18. All 15 members of the Bulldog team saw action.

Brad Baker led in rebounding with eight, and Thomas Duncan added five.

Heckaman also hauled down 13 rebounds, Bemiller had seven steals, and Heckaman contributed four steals. The frosh will host Tippecanoe Valley at 6:30p.m. Thursday, November 30, and Elkhart Central at 6:30p.m. Monday, December 4. Most Valuable Kevin Mitchell, 27, last week joined Willie Mays and Willie McCovey as the only San Francisco Giants ever to win the National League Most Valu- . able Player Award. Mitchell led the majors in ’B9 with 47 home runs and 125 RBIs, while hitting a career high .291 to lead the Giants to their first pennant since 1962.
Panther frosh win two
North Wood’s freshman Panther boys’ basketball team bounced back after a season-opening loss to win two straight, taking South Bend Clay on November 20, 36-26, and dumping Plymouth 34-25 the following evening. The frosh broke from the blocks quickly against Clay, with Brad Schrock scoring a layup off the opening tip. North Wood scored numerous times after coming up with steals and converting quickly downcourt. Schrock and Chip Bradway split the Panthers’ 16 first-quarter points evenly, and finished with 10 and 11 points respectively. Neil Richmond and Cory Troycr Sons set bowling tourney The Sons of the American Legion are planning a bowling tournament at Gold Crown Lanes, Saturday, December 9. The tourney is open to all squadrons in Northern Indiana, with a new twist added this year. A dance will take place at the American Legion Post, W. Lincoln, 8-1 lp.m. The dance will be open to the public, with Dan Rice providing D.J. service for his “Juke Box.” There will be no charge to bowlers staying for the dance. However, there will be a $1 per person charge for the public (please note correction in dance charge—it was incorrectly stated as $4 in a recent article).

Earns NLC honors
North Wood senior Stacey Cripe has earned an at-large selection on the Northern Lakes Conference all-conference swim team, according to an announcement made last week. She is the lone member of the Panther girls’ swim team to earn conference honors on a team dominated by Wawasee with seven picks. Concord swimmers earned five places on the team, and Warsaw four, with Plymouth earning one place. Joining Cripe on the at-large level were one swimmer each from Concord and Plymouth. Roger Karnes, former Panther swim coach, was named NLC Coach of the Year. Concord won the round robin competition with a 5-0 mark, and earned 15 all-sports trophy points, as did Wawasee, with the Warriors winning the championship meet with 272

Basketball « schedule •’ changes North Wood High School Athletic Director Dick Camp? bell has announced the following changes regarding the North Wood boys’ basketball schedule. Originally, the varsity and JV teams were scheduled to play Penn there on Friday, December 1, and Northridge High School at home on Saturday, December 2. •: - In order to accomodate Penn High School, and permit the football players who will be playing in the Class 5A state championship game against Carmel this Saturday to get in their mandatory five practices, North Wood and Northridge have agreed to make an adjustment in their schedules by switching dates. North Wood will open the season by playing Northridge AT HOME on Friday, December 1, with the JV game start-' ing at 6:15p.m. The Panthers will then travel TO PENN on Saturday night, December 2 r with the JV tipoff scheduled for 6:15. Varsity games will follow. North Wood basketball fans ( and season ticket holders should make note of this change 1 in the schedule. Anyone who still wishes to i purchase season tickets for Panther basketball is encouraged to purchase them now, in the high school athletic director’s office. There are still many good seats available, and the outlook is very promising for Panther basketball and its fans, according to Campbell.
Spaghetti supper rescheduled The Tri Kappa Sorority has announced a change in date for its spaghetti supper, originally scheduled for Saturday, December 2. The supper will be served 5-7p.m., FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, prior to the NorthWood-Northridge basketball game. Please note change of date, and plan to attend! Game time changed... North Wood High School has announced the following time change for this Saturday’s girls’ basketball game with Bethany Christian. Tipoff is scheduled for Ip.m., instead of the previously announced 1:30p.m. In addition, the varsity contest will be played first, followed by the JV game. Sports clips... All-Area Coaches from 40 area high schools selected the South Bend Tribune’s All-Area teams for all classes last week. NLC honors The schools comprising the Northern Lakes Conference have announced the presentation of the NLC Outstanding Service Award to Clifford Murray, Concord High School. Murray has served Concord High School for 32 years, in a variety of capacities, including: coach for three different sports, instructor, vice-principal and principal. He will be honored prior to the varsity tipoff of the Elkhart Central at Concord basketball game Friday, December 2.
