—a timeless musical
By BARB KEISER Editor On November 4-5-6, 1966, at West Park pavilion, Nappanee Civic Theatre presented a family musical entitled “Plain and Fancy,” billed as fun for all. With action taking place in and around “Bird-in-Hand,” a town in the Amish country of Pennsylvania, the theatre group enjoyed, along with the audiences, a chance to forget cares and troubles, and enjoy good, wholesome family entertainment. Creta Jane Dennis was producer and Robert Coppes directed the musical. Their staff included Sue Parker, musical director; Dori Crane, with another of her famous set designs; Bertie Loudermilk and Helen Price taking care of costumes

and Kay Stutzman doing the makeup. Walt McDonald served as stage manager, with Gil Jenkins, Elden Schrock and Thurlo Clouse as his able assistants. Mrs. Robert Bechtel was organist, and properties were provided through the efforts of Betty Johnson, Louise Thompson, Alma Yoder, Peg Stillson, Edna Schrock and Hilda Coppes. Just in case...prompters were Dorothy Howard and Dorothy Uline. Publicity for the production came from Juanita Hopewell and Dee Leavitt, who distributed posters by Margaret Arm an trout. The programs were printed with direction from Jane Hcpler, and tickets by Vcrn Meeks and Rudy Dennis. Reservations came directly to Helen Price and Ray Miller, Dr. Ed Eichenberger served as house manager, Irene Best was hostess, and ushers were members of the National Honor Society at Nappance High School. Cast members included Nancy Biever, Glen Stump, Bob Schmcltz, Ruth Pancoast, Lyle Yoder, Ray Pippenger, Helen Yoder, Howard Yoder, Carol Strang, Dave Millbem, Julie Biever and Jerry Stine. Also: Frankie Copeland, Jeff Coppes, Ronald Plooy, Dr. James R. Miller, Art Gall, Jim Lentz, Bob Schmeltz, Ruth George, Jan Eichenberger, Nancy Cook, Carol Bower, Martha Bolyard, Helen Nusbaum and Jeff Coppes. Nappanee Advance-News Editor Don Nichols was extremely complimentary in his review of the production. “It was inevitable,” he said, “that, sooner or later, the Nappanee Civic Theatre would do “Plain and Fancy.” This musical has special meaning to so many people here, and the audience thoroughly enjoyed itself, everyone finding different items which tickled him. Our Amish neighbors could not have been offended by it, because it doesn’t poke fun at them.” He continued, “When the city folks come to Bird in Hand seeking Jacob Yoder, only to find there are 15 Jacob Yoders (each with at least one daughter), everyone in the Nappanee area can chuckle.” Nichols went on to report that Nancy Biever stole the show with her funny lines, and that she could “belt out a song-and she’s good to

look at, too.” Lyle Yoder was said to have been perfect as “Old Jacob Yoder,” and Helen Yoder did a fine job with her two mood-setting songs. “Carol Strang adds humor, warmth, and charm to a fine, rich singing voice, and she does the best job of anybody in mastering a dialect without overdoing it.” Both male and female chorus members were complimented on their musical offerings, and it was reported that friends who knew Bob Schmeltz and Jim Lentz “will be fractured when they first appear.” Bob Coppes was working at the Advance-News office then, and everyone was very much aware of the time he spent with the production. He was encouraged to accept the tribute of an out-of-towncr who asked how long such great shows had been going on at Nappanee. Many Nappanceans have enjoyed civic theatre productions since the Ijeginning of the local group, and the present theatre organization continues a fine tradition of productions enjoyable for persons of all ages. To refresh your memory of “Plain and Fancy,” you arc invited to see the production at Amish Acres this summer. additions have been made, musical numbers expanded-but all the elements which make it a laughable, enjoyable musical production remain.
