The sunshine and mild temperatures brought out a lot of leaf rakers last week to do some last minute yard chores before the snow flies. Hilda Strang was one of them. Although the wind was nippy, enough heat was generated from the work to keep the rakers warm. On the forest floor leaves and other debris are a part of the most densely populated areas of the forest. The number of organisms in each square foot of the floor may be four times as great as the human population of earth. Each year two tons of debris, dead leaves, flower parts, seeds and such fall uponjustone acre of the forest floor.(AN photo by Julia Mast)
