Tough opponents stall Bulldogs In seventh grade basketball action last week, Nappanee faced two tough opponents, losing to Heritage 51-32 and Concord, 42-30. LaMarr Lakins led the scoring against Heritage (10-3) with 12 points with a fine 6-9 shooting effort, Other scorers were Matt Ingle, 6; Craig Croy, 4; Denny Holmes, 2; Mike Conrad, 2; Chad Flory, 2; Joel Allen, 2; and Stan Murphy, 2. Leading rebounders for the Bulldogs were Matt Ingle, 5; Denny Holmes, 5; and Stan Murphy, 4. Nappanee went to Concord on Thursday to face the undeafeated Minutemen. Although they were short in numbers due to illnesses, they played with a lot of spirit to score 30 points against a tough Concord defense. Matt Ingle led the scoring with ten points, and Ryan Thompson came off the bench to score eight points. Also scoring were LaMarr Lakins, 4; Denny Holmes, 2; Mike Conrad, 2; Craig Croy, 2; and Rod Bradway, 2 Rod Bradway was the leading rebounder with four. Matt Ingle and Mike Conrad each had three. The shooting percentages were respectable as they connected on 16-40 (40 percent) -vs- Heritage, and 15-36 ( 42 percent) against Concord. The seventh grade record is now 7-5 and the team will play at Whiteman on Thursday. Panthers pull it out in the final quarter The North Wood girls’ basketball team squeaked by the Lakeland squad on Tuesday, January 21, by a score of 38-36. The North Wood squad, paced by leading scorers JoAnn Miller, Christy Wesolek and Missy Beck, pulled the victory out in the final quarter. The match was even at seven after one. Lakeland went ahead by one at the half, 16-17. Each team scored an additional seven points in the third, but it was in the final quarter that the Panthers came from behind to outscore the Lakeland team, 15-12, giving them the two-point edge. From the field, North Wood was 14-40, for 35 percent. Lakeland was 10-40, for 25 percent. From the line, the Panthers were 43 percent, while Lakeland was 16-25 for 64 percent. Leading the scoring drive for the Panthers were Miller with seven, Beck with nine, and Wesolek with eight North Wood’s varsity goes to 9-4, 2-2 in conference play. In the JV action, North Wood’s team was once again the victor. The Panthers topped the Lakeland team 46-23. Leading scorer was Lori Whetstone with an impressive 14 points. Kristi Dyck pulled down six for the team
