Challenging year ahead

for North Wood gymnasts

by Marie Dobeckl This will be a tough year for the North Wood girls’ gymnastics team, according to Coach Connie Stillson. Coach Stillson is in her second consecutive year of coaching for the team. "In the past, the girls competed in three different levels,” explained Coach Stillson. The highest skilled members competed in the “optional" level, where they were able to make their routines as difficult as they were able to master. The other two levels were the Intermediate and Beginning Compulsory. At this level, there were moves that were mandatory. "This wasn't allowing the girls to develop to a higher level,” explained Coach Stillson. This year, the IHSAA decided to eliminate compulsory events, and start a new system. All of the girls will compete at the “optional” level, at either the varsity or JV level. The JV optional is no more difficult than the old compulsory, she explained. “Even though they are optional, they will still have requirements at each level,” she noted. "We may not field a full varsity team right away,” the coach said, “but we have the option to move up later.” The coach must declare at each meet if they are competing at the varsity or JV level. “I would rather see the girls compete against girls at their own skill level and gain self-confidence,” Stillson remarked. The team will face nine schools in competition this year. Returning letterwinner for the team is D#wn Showalter, a junior. Dawn at the intermediate level last year, and will “probably

Two-point third spoils upset

The Warsaw Tigers came to the North Wood Panther Pit on Friday, looking to slide right by the hosts, and move on to Saturday’s game against top-ranked Marion. Instead, the Panthers gave Warsaw the scare of their lives, and would have upset the visitors if a two-point third quarter had not spoiled the fine effort. North Wood trailed by two points after the first stanza, 16-14, and by two at halftime, 30-28. But an 11-2 edge in the third stanza proved to be the Panthers' undoing, as they went on to outscore Warsaw 22-14 in the final period, for the 55-52 final tally. In the first half, the Panthers were patient, hitting 11-20 from the field, and adding 6-7 from the line. Crist’s shot early In the third knotted the score, but the Panthers followed with seven turnovers, and shot Just five more times. hat period The Tigers were led by Rich Fox with 18 points, aided by 16 points from Mike Henn, including six free throws in the final period. floor exercises,” Stillson said. Another returner to the team is Missy Slabaugh, a sophomore. Missy handled the all-around event last year, and looks strong in the beam, uneven bars and vaulting. “With a little more time to prepare a floor exercise, she should move in the all-around direction,” Stillson noted. Another junior, Teresa Maurer,

thWood’s scoring honors went to Crist and Bill Holdeman, who each had 10, with Rex Hochstedler adding nine-seven in the final stanza. For the night, the Panthers shot 20-38 for 53 percent, and added 12-14 from the line for 86 percent. Warsaw hit 24-49 and 7-14. The loss drops the Panthers to 2-9 on the season (1-2 in the NLC). JV slips by Warsaw

The North Wood Junior Varsity Panthers saw two 10-point leads disappear in Friday's NLC contest with Warsaw. But the Panthers held on to defeat the Tigers, 46-44. The first and third quarters belonged to North Wood, while the Tigers had good stretches in the second and fourth stanzas. Rob Prenkert scored 11 points and Todd Firestone added 10, to lead the Panther attack. Matt Karnes and Andy Stump came off the bench to each add four points.

Waves set competitive pace

The Wa-Nee Waves have gotten into the swim of things, competing in the Snowflake Invitational in Warsaw, January 11, and facing Goshen in a dual meet, January 18. The Waves have been improving with each meet, according to Coach Roger Karas, and have done an excellent job! Some of the swimmers have swam above the qualifying times in their event, making them “overachievers” enabling them to receive a certificate. Coming up is an invitational at Concord on January 25-26. Good Luck Waves!

returns to the squad. This is Teresa’s second year on the NW gymnastics team. She competed at the beginning level last year, and will move up this year, thanks to the new ruling. “Teresa can use more difficult tricks in her routines, without being stuck in the beginning level...this is a case where the new ruling has helped,” Stillson explained. Two freshmen are new to the team, and have “good potential”, according to Stillson. They are Jeanine Wing, and Drenda Cutchln. “They both have quite a bit of skill,” the coach said, “and are both strong in tumbling." Jeanine will work the floor and beam, and Drenda will work the bars and beam, and should move into the floor exercises in the future. Christine Laßue is a sophomore, and this will be her first year with the team. Christine looks promising in the bars and floor. Frances Poling is another first year member, who is also a sophomore. She will compete at the JV level on the beam. Other freshmen competiting for the Panthers will be: Kim Randolph, beam and floor; Beth Moore, beam and vaulting; Monica Ramer, floor and beam; and Danielle Adams, floor and beam. This should be a maturing time for the team, and Stillson looks for a lot of returning members next year. Coach Stillson is trying to interest young gymnasts in the sport, by offering a summer program for 7-9 graders. “We hope to have this again this year,” she said.
