The first meeting of a welltrained Leader Dog and the new owner la the emotional start of Independent travel. A lasting partnership Is born, thanks to friends of the school. Michigan, in recognition of the club’s SIOO donation in 1985. The project is supported by Lions Clubs throughout the United States. Past enrollments have included 16 graduates from Indiana in 1981; 16 in 1982; 16 in 1983 ; 21 in 1984, and 14 in 1985. A total of 338 persons received Leader Dogs, and went through the training program in 1985. Lions interested in helping blind men and women solve their travel problems established and developed the Leader Dog School, one of the largest organizations of its kind in the world, in 1939. The purpose of the school is to train dogs to lead blind persons, and to provide facilities and means whereby blind persons may obtain Leader Dogs. Ail eligible blind men and women are taught to travel, with safety, with the assistance of their Leader Dog. Instructors at the Leader Dog School convert ordinary house pets (German Shepherds, Golden and Labrador Retrievers) into lifetime companions, capable of leading the blind to their destination. Lions are privileged to offer the
