He found out about the “Natural-For-Life” program through an ad in a muscle magazine “It’s the first National organization for Natural bodybuilders, ” said Dan. Why, if there are so many harmful side effects from the use of steroids and other hormones, do the athletes continue to take them and the doctors continue to prescribe them? “Because,” explained Dan, “the drug enables them to train longer and more muscle can build up. I have to train twice as long, but I will have no side effects. ’ ’ Dan said the transition to natural bodybuilding will slowly come about. There is a higher entry fee for

“natural” competitions, “becauseof the cost of testing before national competitions,” said Dan. In the U S. Natural Contests, participants are required to take and pass a lie detector test, stating that they have never used steroids or hormones. “At the high level contests, it costs SI,OOO to enter,” explained Dan, “but they refund the money if you pass the tests.” Dan trains in is home in Nappanee, with Olympic weights. “I use all free weights,” said Dan. After trying both free weights and machines, Dan prefers the free. “Your balance is much better, and you can injure muscles you’re not trying to build on a machine.” Dan trains six days a week, two to three hours a day on his own program. “1..0n1y train with aerobics before a contest,” he said. He “*lB confident that he will set records at the competition, since he now lifts 50-200 lbs. over the present “natural” records. The aspects of posing were developed by Dan, through studying poses in books and magazines. “I spent $3,500 in books and magazines alone,” he said. The poses help a bodybuilder to show off their strong points, and also hide their weak spots. “You have to be in proportion. Your calves should be similar to your upper arms, and to get a “V” look, your chest to waist measurement should be different by 20 inches,” Dan explained. “I want to get involved,” stressed Dan. "I want kids to know that you can be a champ without taking enhancing drugs.” Dan has already talked to graders in Fulton, where

The Jimmies enjoyed a brief lead, 10-7, in the opening quarter, but successive baskets by North Wood put the Panthers out front to stay for the evening. Mike Hamby, an outstanding outside shooter, took game scoring honors with 30 points, a career high for him. His 14 first-half points kept the Jimmies in the contest, but the Panthers came back with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the first half for Scott Crist, and led at intermission, 34-24. Crist led the Panthers in the scoring column for the game, with 19 points, but Mickey Marks added 11, and Rex Hochstedler and Daric Gessinger, each 10 to pace North Wood. Coach Lechlitner stated, “It was nice to see us hitting free throwsthat’s something we haven’t been doing this year. ” The Panthers were 18-20 from the charity stripe, for 90 percent, and added 28-52 from the floor for 53 percent. The coach continued, “Shooting-wise, we were a lot better. We also emphasized getting the ball in to Scott, but if it isn’t open down in the post, we have to get the ball back out to somebody for a better shot.” The Panthers were scared briefly in the opening minute of the third quarter, when Jimtown whittled the . lead down to two points, but the Panthers rallied to lead by 10 again at the end of three. In the fourth quarter, North Wood capitalized on the free throw attempts, hitting 12-13 to seal the win.
