There was evidence that concrete had been watered down, and approximately $250,000 worth of work needed to be redone. Dr. Michael Borger resigned as Physician Medical Director for the Nappanee EMS Department, and Nappanee continued preparations for the tenth annual Apple Festival. OCTOBER The freshman football team upped its record to 3-1, whomping the Wawasee Warriors, 40-0, while the JV squeaked by, 16-12. Gina Yoder, a North Wood freshman, placed second in the high school golf sectional, and Abby Lelle continued to break records, this time in the 100 freestyle against Rochester, as the Panthers won the swim meet. 92-75. North Wood cheerleaders held a clinic for third, fourth and fifth graders, who assisted them by cheering at the homecoming game: construction was completed on the Nappanee Missionary Church addition, and an open house planned for October 6. Phillip Sumpter was the first place winner in the Apple Festival “Apple Dumpling Contest”, in the 3-18 month category; the North Wood housing class toured the Ruthmere Mansion in Elkhart, with instructors Mrs. Fales and Mrs. Wing: and the First Mennonite Church celebrated its 110th anniversary. Also in October-Dedication ceremonies were held for the Schulmerich Quadrabell Carillon, installed at the Nappanee United Methodist Church. The bell instrument was the gift of Cecil E Stalnaker, in loving memory of his wife. Annie Laurie, and would provide the community with the lovely sound of chimes, year-round. for the annual drive; Curt Sisco led the North Wood cross country team to victory over Rochester, 16-43, and Angie Whetstone was crowned homecoming queen, while the Panthers defeated Bremen, 44-0 in a downpour. / ’• In swimming, the 50-yard freestyle record fell to Abby Lelle in the Wawasee swim meet, with her mark of 25.99. She continued her record-breaking efforts, having broke them in five straight meets. North Wood shut out the Warsaw Tigers, 43-0, to continue a successful football season; Heidi Wagar and Cami Bethel set school records in the East Noble meet, as did Abby Lelle, Kristi Baker, Tonya Ramer and Renee Henschen, in the 400-yard freestyle relay; and Henning Uhlig, a German exchange student, discussed his lifestyle, while staying at the Will Wilson home. Seventy percent of parents of North Wood High students participated in SWAP Day; Kurt Sisco and Renita Graber brought home individual trophies from the Manchester Cross Country Invitational, and the Nappanee Chamber of Commerce honored Bobbie Wilson for her three years of service as Apple Festival Chairperson-holding a breakfast in her honor Wa-Nee announced a 33-cent reduction in the advertised tax rate for 1986, and North Wood football players received all conference honors--Todd Cleveland, Scott Crist, Thad Grove, Doyle Stump, Keith Eby and Bill Holdeman, first team: Tom Myers, Phil Wilson, Joas Weirich, Scott Warren, Fred Jessup, Rusty Elliott and Robin Wenger, second team, and Kirk Beer and Jeff Lengacher, honorable mention. While his Panthers were earning honors. Coach Jim Andrews also received one-he was named “M”, Association’s Coach of the Year, during Manchester College’s homecoming festivities. The Panthers took the NLC championship away from Plymouth’s Rockies, 7-0, winning the contest in the last 11 seconds; Dick Campbell was selected as the District II nominee for the Indiana High School
Athletic Director of the Year, and the boys’ cross country team finished the season with a 6-6 record. Steven Burke joined the AdvanceNews staff in October, assuming the advertising position vacated by Dale Tobias, who left the staff after 20 years. The City of Nappanee made preparations for the 60th anniversary celebration, November 4; the “Big Move” tools place at the library, with the first load of books being delivered by horse and wagon; bids were received for the entranceway to Alphabet. NOVEMBER Fifth-ranked Mishawaka’s Cavemen ousted the North Wood Panthers in the opening match of the Mishawaka Regional volleyball tourney, eliminating the Panther hopes for a victory. The Plymouth Rockies ended North Wood’s hopes for playoff wins, 14-6, and the Panthers were forced to the sidelines. Meanwhile, Abby Lelle continued her winning ways, earning the NLC championship in the 50 freestyle at sectionals, and finishing as a runner-up in the 100 freestyle. President Reagan announced that he will add former Indiana Governor Otis R Bowen to his cabinet as Secretary of Health and Human Services.
