We bought an artificial Christmas tree. I know-I've said it for'years-no fake trees in this house! We need the fresh pine smell; the challenge of straightening the tree with the crooked trunk; the thrill of being able to camouflage those empty spaces with decorations and icicles. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without it! No offense, Kiwanians-I hear your tree lot is tops. The trees are fresh and beautiful, and your prices are reasonable-but our family has, for a number of years, enjoyed cutting our own trees. So, about the first weekend in December, a group of our clan members pile into a van and head for a nearby farm. No matter the weather-we’ve gone in pouring down rain, freezing cold, perfect snowy but sunny daysalways facing the challenge of selecting and harvesting the best trees ever. Trees are selected, cut, tagged, wrapped and paid for. Then, after a talk with Santa, who is right there to distribute candy and take lastminute suggestions; a cup of hot chocolate, and a last look around at families bringing in their trees, we head for home. Once we get our prize home, we bring it inside to let it warm up, struggle to get it in the stand, straight and tall (how did it get that crook in the trunk-we didn’t see that before it was cut!), and fill the stand with water-be sure to add the package of “stay fresh’’. The problems continue. The tree looked great out there in the wide

open spaces-now it’s too bushy for our living room. We’ll need to rearrange-maybe put the furniture out in the front yard for a few weeks. Can’t see TV. The tree looks shorter now. Too many needles dropping off. The tree-top angel is really leaning, because the top of the tree is growing off the side of the trunk. Major decision time-this is the year we start a new tradition. The carefully-selected, fresh-cut tree is moved out front, to the big planter near the picture window. It’s anchored down, and adorned with its own string of lights. Looks great! Several hours later, the newlypurchased “fake" arrives. Simple assembly. Very little shedding. No water needed. It decorates J»eautifully-those favorite ornaments really stand out when we have the option of bending a branch slightly, to position them just right-and the tree fits beautifully into the corner of the living room! Finished! Gorgeous! Looks like a “real" tree! Is that pine we smell? Good move! Should have done it years ago! Love it! Get the camera r Christmas has come and gone again. Our trees were very much appreciated and enjoyed, as lights twinkled on both sides of the picture window. The outside tree has been moved to the back yard, to serve as a shelter near the feeders for our feathered friends. The inside tree has been carefully packed away-to rest until next season. If our photos turn out, we’ll be glad to share them. I wonder if the family might let us ride along to the tree farm next Christmas season-just for the fun of it!
