Look toward '86... Victory eludes Panthers

The Old Timer North Wood’s boys’ varsity basketball team heads into 1986 still looking for their first win of the season, falling in last week’s Goshen Holiday Tournament to Northridge, 68-51, in the consolation game, after being defeated by the host Goshen Redskins, in the second game of the opening round, 62-46. North Wood went looking for a fourth holiday tournament title in five years (winning in 80, 83 and 84), but couldn’t get the offensive game in gear. The championship game matched the Fairfield Falcons against the Redskins, with both teams struggling with 2-5 records. Fairfield was a surprise winner over Northridge in the first game of the tournament, 67-56. In the NorthWood-Goshen game, the top scorer for the evening was Goshen’s Ryan Sorrell, with 24. The Redskins shot 41 percent from the field, on 22-53, and 18-24 free throws for 75 percent. Kevin Wilfong added 18 for Goshen. North Wood was paced by reserve Rex Hochstedler, with 10. The Panthers shot a cold 32 percent, on 18-55, and added 10-14 from the line for 71 percent.

Goshen outrebounded the Panthers 41-31, with Scott Crist leading North Wood with eight. A dejected Coach Phil Lechlitner stated, “We don’t have a leader. In the critical part of the game, we don’t have anybody to take charge and perform. We ball and had open shots, but you have to put it in the basket and we didn’t.’’ Goshen led 10-7 after the first quarter, and were up 25-21 at intermission. After three, it was the Redskins on top by 11, 41-30, and a short burst by the Panthers at the start of the final quarter wasn’t enough to earn the win. FOR NORTHWOOD: Scott Crist, License branch hours... In last week’s issue of The Advance-News, the “For your information” box had a misprint in the schedule of hours for the Nappanee License Branch. The branch Is open on Saturday, from 8:30-ll:30a.m., and not 11 ;30-Noon, as was listed. the Advance-News apologizes for the error, and for any inconvenience It might have caused.

Two wins and a title North Wood’s junior varsity basketball Panthers got their two first wins of the season last week, winning their own holiday tournament by defeating Goshen, 51-29, and slipping by Fairfield, 46-44 In the championship contest. These action photos were taken during the afternoon session of the tournament. The Advance-News staff apologizes for not being able to have a photographer present for a team picture after the championship game. (AN photos by Marie Dobecki)

NORTHRIDGE GAME In the consolation game, the Raiders opened a quick 8-0 advantage over the Panthers, and never looked back, on their way to the 68-51 consolation round win. The game was followed by the Goshep-Fairfield championship contest, with Fairfield’s Ron Bechtel swishing two free throws with four seconds remaining to give the Falcons the 1985 crown, 51-49. Northridge, with three Raiders in double figures, shot 49 percent from the field, on 24-49. They were 74 percent from the line, on 20-27. Northridge had the game’s leading scorer in Troy Baughman, with 16 points. Jeff Riegsecker added 14 and Steve Braddock, 12. The Panthers were again cold from the field, hitting just 20-64 for 31 percent. They were also cool from the line, connecting on 11-24 free throw attempts for 46 percent. Scott Crist led North Wood in scoring, with 14 points. Rex Hochstedler and Dustin Miller each added eight. Northridge opened to a 19-10 lead by the end of one, and were never really threatened by the coldshooting Panther squad. In the third quarter, the closest North Wood came was to within 13, and in the final stanza, the Panthers sank to 20 percent, on 4-20 from the field. The Panthers will hope for better things in the new year, Opening Friday at home, against Jimtown, and traveling to Mishawaka on Saturday.
