The shirt you received for Christmas doesn’t fit, and you really didn't need a third pair of slippers. Can you return those Christmas gifts and get a refund or exchange? Refunds and exchanges of merchandise are really changes in the contract, or agreement, between the buyer and seller, says Attorney General Linley Pearson And returning the merchandise for exchange, credit, or refund, is generally a privilege rather than a right, he said. .An exception is when you have

purchased an item that is defective or was misrepresented In either case, you are entitled to a suitable substitute or a refund, the attorney, general noted. While return policies vary from store to store, they come in three basic forms, he stated. They are as follows. Exchange Merchandise may be returned and another item of the same kind may be taken in its place This privilege is offered when the buyer, for example, has made a mistake in the choice of size or color

of the item. Return for credit. When merchandise is returned, the customer is given a credit slip, or his account is credited with the amount paid. The customer may then apply that amount to the purchase of any item in the store. Refund Under this policy, the customer gets his money back Retailers who use and advertise this policy effectively guarantee satisfaction with whatever merchandise they sell. If the returned item had been charged to a credit card initially, the refund.may take the form of a credit charged to the same credit card number. In every case, these policies are voluntarily adopted by retailers who wish to provide a high standard of service to their customers. They are not required to do so by law, Pearsort said. Pearson said consumers could avoid problems when it comes to returning items by making it a rule to check the store’s return policy before you buy. Some stores have “no return” or “final sale” policies. If you are in doubt about the policy, have your sales slip marked "on approval”, Pearson suggested. Honest mistakes over items that don’t fit, don’t serve the purpose for which they were bought, or turn out to be inappropriate gifts from a v.cll-meaning spouse or friend entitle you to use a store’s refund policy, providing they have one, Pearson said. Return privileges are usually extended with the requirement that merchandise be returned within a specified time period, and be in new condition Stores often require a sales slip or other evidence that the item was actually bought there, and not at some other store For some items, such as sales merchandise, the policy may be that all sales are final. While retailers have the right to adopt such a policy, “final sale” items should be clearly identified or so advertised. Consumers should be careful not to abuse return privileges, Pearson said. Some shoppers buy casually and return merchandise purchased on impulse, causing an unnecessary amount of sales time and paperwork. That costs the store money, and ultimately increases the cost of all merchandise in the store to all customers It also causes some retailers to adopt less liberal return policies than they might otherwise use, Pearson said.

1985, . * i * review... |i • k Coni, from Pg. 8 S gram shared by senior citizensQn the days of the depression. Sewer construction nears 20 percent completion. Students enjoy the Ilieresa Schepman Memorial Reader roost, a new addition to the children’s department at the new library location. DECEMBER In December, the Common Council discussed rezoning the Kenny Stump property northeast of tovin, for apartment construction. The rezoning, passed. . The music department at North Wood High School presented the annual winter concert, filling the auditorium with the sounds of the season. The park department received notification that the SIOO,OOO grant application had been approved by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and only federal approval remains-and the department will begin work on increasing parks and recreation offerings to Nappanee. The fii*st snowstorm hit Nappanee on December 2, enforcing the fact that winter had indeed arrived once again; Santa Bucks winners received a total of SI2OO from 15 sponsoring businesses in the annual Christmas promotion-encouraging shoppers to spend their Christmas money "at home”. Halley’s Comet was the topic of discussion in many circles, as amateur astronomers took to their telescopes to look for the formation. Open Door encouraged local citizens to adopt a family for the holidays, providing Christmas treats and needed items. Service organizations rang the bell to raise funds for Open Door; canned items and other gifts, in addition to cash donations were accepted, and a number of local and area families were helped through the season. Tax deductible contributions were also encouraged Camp Fire’s 75th Anniversary Congress was held in Missouri, with Janyce and Don Guckenberger and Willodean Yoder attending from Nappanee; Panther basketball players were discouraged, as the team continued to look for the first win of the season, while the girls’ basketball team continued to win, and the wrestlers, under new coach, Dennis Lewis, began their season, and won fifth place in their own invitational, with Steve Cutchin and Gary Urednick as winners. Dave Hartman, who is determined to win a gold medal in bicycling, in the ‘BB Olympics in Korea, was featured in the Advance-News, and on area television-good luck, Dave! The North-Central Association Evaluation Committee visited North Wood High School, offering comments and observances to students, teachers and other staff members. NonhWood’s swim team won their first-ever Panther Invitational, just a week after freshman swimmer Todd Ramer set a new school record in the 500 free; the JV basketball teams- both boys’ and girls’, won their own invitationals. The Library board set a new policy for use of the community room at the library; board members approved the 1986 contract for Union Twp., which was set at SB,OOO. The Christmas season brought a live nativity to the First Church of God, with members inviting persons throughout the community to share in its presentation. Nativity scenes were also seen on the lawns at the First Mennonite and United Methodist Churches, and church chimes rang out Christmas carols from the Methodist Church, And many in the community enjoyed the delicious grapefruit and oranges sold by the Optimist Club. We hope you have enjoyed recalling many of the events and activities of 1985-and now on to a new year, new opportunities, and new projects. All best wishes to everyone from the Advance-News staff.
