Funding requests approved by state
Indiana’s Natural Resources Commission has approved seven city and county park and recreation funding requests for the National Park Service’s Land and Water Conservation Fund program. The announcement, made last week, came on behalf of the commission by Jim Ridenour, director of the Department of Natural Resources. Ridenour is state liason officer for the program. Historical society holds elections
Maj. Leßoy H. Miller, Goshen; was elected president of the Elkhart County Historical Society at its November 20 board meeting. Also elected were Albert Hornberger, Goshen, vice-president; Mrs. John W. Van Dyke, Elkhart, secretary, and Elbert Groves, New Paris, treasurer. Newly elected to the society’s board at the annual meeting, also held November 20, were David C. Bonfiglio, Elkhart; Mrs. Glenn W. Brown and Mrs. Paul Raber, Bristol, and Mrs. Wayne Cook, Jimtown. Mrs. Van Dyke was re-elected. Director Martha Pickrell reported that the society has hosted nearly 4,000 visitors this year, at the Elkhart Historical Museum in Bristol, There have been 125 new accessions added to the museum, library and archives, including 49 catalogued books, microfilms of the U.S. Census for Elkhart County, 1830-1910, and records from various governmental departments of the county. Fifteen volunteers were
quests from 28 agencies, totaling just over $2 million in funds. The allocation funded six of the requests and partially funded a seventh project. The Land and Water Conservation Fund is a 50 percent matching grant program administered through the DNR for the acquisition and development of outdoor recreation sites by local park and recreation agencies. Since the beginning of the program in 1965, more than $65 million has been receivedby Indiana for park improvement. - - All projects will be submitted to

Pickrell, Elkhart; Mrs. Jay Klein, Wakarusa; Wayne Cook, Jimtown, and Merrill Thompson, Bristol. .Mrs. Chauncey B. Baldwin, Elkhart, is chairman of the board. Retiring board members include Keith Mast and Marion Troyer, Goshen, and Roger Etter, Elkhart. Membership in the society is open to anyone who has an interest in local history. The society was founded in 1896, and has maintained a county museum and library, with the aid of Elkhart County funds for nearly 90 years. The Elkhart County Historical Museum, located at Rush Memorial, Bristol, since 1968, is open to the public from March 1Decemper 1 each year.

Singles welcome
A “Beat the Clock Party” has been planned for Saturday, December 14, by the Elkhart County Young Adults Club. The club will be hosting the event at 8 p.m., at the Union Center Church of the Brethren, located north of Nappanee at the intersection of County Roads 50 and 11. The party will feature skits similar to those featured on the 1950’s television game show, “Beat the Clock.” The event is open to all area single young adults between the ages of 17 and 34. Those attending are asked to dress casual. There will also be a minimal cover charge. Formerly known as Elkhart County Rural Youth, the club is a socialservice group co-sponsored by the Elkhart County Farm Bureau and the Cooperative Extension Service.
