The winter heating season has arrived in the Nappanee area, and, unfortunately, some of the factory layoffs have started to come at the same time. This has caused an increase in the requests for Energy Assistance at Open Door. Nappanee is fortunate, however, that the matching funds program at -NIPSCO has started at this time, so' that each dollar paid by Open Door is matched by a dollar from the NIPSCO stockholders. Open Door has tried over the years to help those in unfortunate situations to avoid having the gas and electricity shut off. This means that Open Door, in addition to having food in the food pantry, must have funds in the bank, in order to pay these bills. This is accomplished by receiving cash donations from individuals, churches, clubs and some businesses. In addition, for the past two years, the service cjubs have had bell ringers on the streets during the Christmas season. This has made a substantial contribution to Open Door funds. Open Door has made a request for funds to the Special Program Fund Committee of United Way, but the committee has denied the request, due to lack of funds. Open Door has renewed the request to them, and hope to receive help after the first of the year. Bob McAndrews, Open Door Director.
