ducts, in cooperation with Toy Manufacturers of America, the Industry trade asportation, recently developed a Safety and Cn—nur Information Program. The basis of the program is a booklet from which the tallowing safety Ups are excerpted. Makeup: Use makeup containing ingredients that are labeled "Made with U.S. Approved Color Additives,” “Laboratory Tested,” “Meets Federal Standards for Cosmetics” or “Non-Toxic.” Follow manufacturer’s instructions for application and removal. Masks: A mask should have holes large enough to allow adequate breathing and vision. Cut to adjust. If necessary. Elastic should be permanently attached to the mask, with no sharp points. Wear mask on top of head when walking; pull U over the face upon reaching the location. Costumes: Costumes should be of flame-retardant materials and large enough so that clothing can be worn underneath, if necessary. Children should wear comfortable shoes or sneakers. Use light colors, reflective tape and-or patches on costumes and treat bags so that trick-or-treaters are visible at night. Accessories: children should carry flashlights or light sticks, never a candle! “Knives”, “swords” and other accessories should be made from flexible materials such as cardboard. Neighborhood safety: go into familiar neighborhoods, stopping only at well-lit places. Draw a simple route map, make certain child and parents have a copy and designate a return time. Give children coins and tell them to call if they are going to be late. Treats: give children a meal or snack before they go out, and emphasize that no treats should be eaten until they get home. Label treats that you give, with your name and telephone number, so that parents can identify the source of treats. Make your own labels or use readily available inexpensive printed address labels. Discard commercially produced candy if the wrapper is loose or the seal has been broken. If anything is suspicious about treats, report this to the police. Consider the following inexpensive nonedible items for treats andor prizes: balls and Jacks, bubble pipes, coloring books, comics and storybooks, miniature collectible and wind-up figures, clay, magic tricks, puppets, yo-yos, small stuffed animals and dolls, snack coupons to a fast food shop or Jce cream parlor, and stickers. Remember not to give products with small parts to children under age three, and look for age guidelines on packages.

Halloween UNICEF program needs you

Halloween is a traditional day for children and giving. It’s an opportunity to become at least for a tew hours, a super-hero, astronaut, monster, princess, or favorite movie star. It’s also a day when chanting “Trick or Treat” is all that’s necessary to receive a piece of candy or fruit. October SI is National UNICEF Day, (In Nappanee, October 2S) a day to remember the United Nations Children’s Fund and the work it does on behalf of the world’s neediest children and mothers. This year, UNICEF is celebrating SO years of “TTick or Treat for UNICEF” children helping children at HalioSince the program began in 1900, nearly SOO million has been raised to bring food, medicine, dean water, and education to children in over 100 of the poorest countries assisted by UNICEF. But the need continues. UNICEF-assisted projects concentrate on providing basic human services to children and mothers, the two most cunerabie populations. Far from being exclusive, however, those projects offer a comprehensive attack oo poverty, malnutrition,

and disease, so that the whole family: and population benefits. UNICEF' works side-by-side with the local government and community to fight these interwoven chronic problems. The basic services approach combats the problem of hunger by confronting the root causes: unsafe water, poor sanitation, unsuitable environment, lack of education, or absence of health care. Our donations are vital to UNICEF’s ability to respond when needed. Only voluntary contributions make UNICEF’s development assistance and emergency relief a continuing and expanding effort; UNICEF does not share in the budget of the United Nations. Millions of children in the developing world depends on us, and citizens like us in other countries, for their survival. Be generous when UNICEF volunteers ask for donations at your door, and patronize local UNICEF benefit events, at Halloween, and year-round. Each dollar you donate will go a long way in the war against world hunger and malnutrition. No child should starve for attention.
