Frosh whip Wawasee, 40-0
The North Wood freshman football team romped to a 40-0 victory over Wawasee as six individuals scored touchdowns. In the first quarter, Jason Gonzales scored on a five yard run and Brandon Hoffer returned an interception 14 yards with Shane Ott running for the extra point. The second quarter had Shaun Kern scoring on a 26 yard punt return and Brad Rhoade sneaking a yard for another touchdown. The Panthers wrapped up the

by “The Old Timer” North Wood’s Junior Varsity, who has been struggling on offense, got help from the defense to defeat Wawasee, 16-12. at the Panther field Tuesday night. The game was to be played at Wawasee Monday, but due to the weather conditions it was moved to NW Tuesday. The Panthers had a chance to put it away in the closing moments of the second quarter, but a fumble after a Warrior punt, at 2:02, and four downs later after a fumble recovery, still found the Panthers short. Ninety-nine rushing yards were earned by the Panthers, and 30 passing yards tallied a 129 total for North Wood. The offensive leader was Junior Mark Crowder, with 69 yds. in 11 carries. Mark was moved down to gain running experience. Eric Grove had 36 yds. in 12 carries. Rod Cray added two yds. in one carry. Quarterback Doug Oriorne completed only 3-10 passes for 30. The longest ever was to Crowder, on a screen for 30. Crowder had a second for three, and Dane Gessinger earned a 2 point P.A.T. Wawasee took the opening kick-off 53 yds. in four plays to score at 6:37. The run for two was stopped, and the score stood at 6-0 in faVor of the Warriors. North Wood didn’t get on the board until there was 1:23 left in the first. -

scoring in the third quarter with Tom Shields scoring on an 11 yard run. Shields also ran for the extra point. Jim Powell went around end for the final tally on a one yard run. Defensively, along with Hoffer’s interception. Matt Hockert had 12 hits, Shaun Kent ll'hits, and a fumble recovery. Aar— Mast had six hits, and Powell, Eric Thornton and Jud Stillson each added five hits. Dan Rameriz and Brent Cripe had fumble recoveries. The freshman record is now 3-1.
Dane Gessinger ran a 36 yd. pass interception in to paydirt. The P.A.T. kick was wide, and the score was tied at six. I Gessinger, on a super punt return, had North Wood set up on the Warrior 37. Crowder, on third and four on a screen left picked up a super block by Gessinger, which enabled Mark to ramble 25 yards before being pushed out on the one. Odiorne on a bad exchange lost a yard, then scored on a second try at 6:01. Odiorne hit Gessinger wideopen for the two-point P.A.T., leaving it 14-6, Panthers. North Wood scored a safety 1:09 later, as an attempted punt sailed over the punter’s head. The Panthers moved ahead 10, 16-6. North Wood blew a big scoring chance in the last 3:28 to lead at the half 16-6. Wawasee made it closer with 1:49 left in the third. The Warriors blocked a punt, then fell on it in the end zone. The pass P.A.T. was intercepted by Trent Hostetler, as the Panthers led by a slim four, 16-12. Wawasee, after gaining possession at 6:00, advanced from their 37 to the NW 17 yard line in tow plays. A 46 yard pass put Wawasee on the Panther 17 at 4:45. Flickinger on third and seven, intercepted his first of two fourth quarter passes, at 3:53. Flickinger picked off his second at 1:38, returning to the Wawasee 43. North Wood then ran out the clock for the 16-12 win.
