Following turnovers by both teams, North Wood went on a 6-0 scoring spree, pulling ahead 12-10. Austin picked up a loose ball, Beer scored on a nice play, and Yeater added a hook on a good pass from Darin Chokey. More turnovers followed, and then Plymouth outscored the Panthers 4-2, and the quarter ended with the score knotted at 14. In the first 2:12 of the second quarter, Vancza outscored Yeater 6-2, and Plymouth pulleand away The Pilgrims were up 22-18 when Beer scored four unanswered points to tie the NLC battle again, this time at 22. Phil Wendel and Ron Bigler each recorded baskets, and the contest was tied for the fifth time Yeater was whistled for his second personal, on what appeared to be a clean block, against Vancza, with three minutes to play in the half. Vancza swished both shots, anji two more Panther turnovers gave the Pilgrims four more points, as they stretched their lead to six, 30-24. Coach Firestone, in trying to rest his starters, was forced to reinstaste them quickly. A super pass from Mark Alfano to Yeater netted the junior his fifth bucket of the half, and pulled the Panthers to within four, 30-26. Skiles and Beer traded buckets, and Vancza added a free throw off a one and one to increase the Plymouth lead to five, at 33-28. Skiles added his fourth first half bucket to give the Pilgrims their biggest lead of the half. 35-28. Tim Weaver swished a 20-footer jumper, hitting nothing but net, to pull the Panthers to within five, 35-30, at the half. North Wood's Mike Yeater and Plymouth's Scott Skiles were tied for first half honors, with 12 each. North Wood shot seven of 11 in the first quarter for 64 percent and went eight of 14 in the second, for 57 percent, giving them a total of 15 of 25 for the half, or 60 percent. Dennis Graff was hot, going 3 for 3, leading LaVille which as a team shot 50 percent hitting 5 of 10. Kevin Riley, meanwhile, was getting open on the wing as things were tight inside. Neither team could hold more than a two point lead. The Lancers, on their pattern offense, had balanced scoring with three players scoring no more than four points. Riley led North Wood’s scoring at halftime with eight. The Panthers shot 62 percent at all the stops by hitting 10 of 16 at halftime. LaVille was led by Dykstra and Graff with six each The Lancers made 3 of 9 in the second for 33 percent shooting 42 percent at halftime hitting 8 of 19. North Wood, up one, 24-23, at 6:34 in the third, had Riley run off five unanswered points to pull ahead 29-23 at 5:27. The Panthers increased the lead to eight, 33-25 on an assist from Beer to Yeater. At 3:32, Skiles scored the Pilgrims sixth point of the quarter, to set the score at 49-43, and then the Panthers made their move. Riley connected on a one and one at the 2:47 mark, Beer followed with a one and one at 2:04, and a minute later an Alfano bomb tied the game at 49 all, knotting the contest for the sixth time. With three seconds remaining, Beer put the shot up, and it bounced off the rim and was tipped around. Ron Bigler finally got hold of the ball and fired it up with “double 00" showing, just before the buzzer. The ball hit nothing but net. and North Wood had their first lead of the second half, 51-50. North Wood, in winning the quarter 21-15, shot 50 percent by hitting seven of 14. The Pilgrims shot 46 percent, six of 13 attempted shots. The Panther§ were caught napping, as Plymouth jumped off to a threepoint lead, 54-51, early in the final quarter. After the Panthers turned the ball over for the second time. A minute and 24 seconds later, the 6’3” forward completed an outstanding three-point play,' giving the Panthers the lead, 56-54, at 5:52. Mark Alfano hit a bomb to put the Panthers up by four, and give them their largest lead of the half, 58-54. After a missed free throw, Skiles connected on the front of another one and one, and North Wood’s lead was cut to three, 58-55. Phil Wendel’s bucket at thfe 4:31 mark, tightened the game to 58-57. Plymouth made three straight turnovers in two minutes and 25 seconds, but North Wood was cold from the field, and failed to capitalize. Skiles ended Plymouth’s cold spell, with a three point play at 2:46, on" Alfano’s third personal. 55 seconds later, Wendel drove the baseline to put Plymouth back on top, 62-58. Yeater ended the Panther drought by scoring on a rebound off a missed Riley shot, at the 1:32 mark. Weaver completeda super assist to Riley, the first of twoassists, and the game was tied at 62. With 40 seconds remaining in the” contest, Plymouth called time out. As the Pilgrims were working for a good shot, Beer tipped the ball away, and Weaver made the recovery, giving the second assist to Riley, who completed a super play to put the Panthers up 64-62. Skiles, who kept cool, scored on a jumper with 12 seconds remaining, and tied the game at 64. North Wood called time out with just nine seconds remaining. Darwin Austin put up the shot with no time left, but it rolled off the rim, sending the game into overtime. Yeater, going four for four in the extra period, made the first of his two one and ones, at the 2:40 mark. Wendel threaded a nice pass to Skiles for the 6’ junior's 26th point of the game, knotting the score at 66. Yeater completed his second one and one at 2:03, to give the Panthers their final lead of the game, 68-66. Two nice moves by Vancza netted the senior his 13th and 15th points a minute apart, put the Pilgrims up by two, 70-68. and gave them the lead for good Yeater missed a five foot jumper just before Vancza scored his second bucket. This would have put the Panthers up by two. Beer also missed the front of a one and one, with just 14 seconds remaining. The Pilgrims added two successful one and one plays, with a six second span, as Beer drove in for the game’s final bucket, with Plymouth coming out with the 74-70 NLC Win. __ „ The Panthers play GbSfien in the Pit Friday night.

The Lancers then started working for the tying bucket but with seven tickets left and forced way outside, a baseball type throw was put up by Whiteman and it hit the glass with five ticks left. North Wood stopped the clock with four left as for the the 12th time the score was knotted at 52 all. The Panthers attempted a long shot that fell short sending North Wood into back-to-back overtimes. Ron Bigler got the tip to Beer who scored quickly putting North Wood up 54-52. LaVille missed two shots after working the clock down to 1:03 when a jump ball was called. North Wood controlled as, working the four corners, Beer was fouled by Adkins with 45 seconds left Beer coolly sank both free throws putting the Panthers up four, 56-52. After LaVille missed its third shot Dykstra fouled Bigler on the rebound with 26 ticks remaining. Bigler missed - but still the Panthers were up by four. On one of many so-so fouls, Austin was whistled for hts fifth, sending Miller, a good free throw shooter, to the lines. Miller missed, however, and a quick rebound pass from Beer to Riley gave the 6-0 junior his 24th points and North Wood a commanding lead of six, 58-52. Whiteman was Heft alone to drive to LaVille’s basket for the final two points of the game as the Panthers' close play improved by keeping their cool for a 5854 victory on the road. North Wood will prepare for its sixth Northern Lakes Conference contest this Friday against the Goshen Redskins in the Pit.

JVs beat Plymouth, LaVille

The North Wood boys JV basketball team defeated Plymouth 42-36 and LaVille 48-35 to run its record to 9-4 on the season. After a sluggish first quarter the Panthers used their press to pick up the game tempo. Rick Yoder was instrumental in making the press effective and also scored two field goals in that period. Mike Drudge came off the bench in the third period to pace the offense as North Wood outscored Plymouth IG-8 to open a 12-point lead. Drudge, Yoder, Brett Grove and Todd Crist each had six points to lead

Frosh win two games

The North Wood boys; freshman basketball team won both its games last week. Last Thursday the frosh defeated Pierre Moran 43-18. Led by Eric Fields' 21 points and four assists plus a superb night at the free throw line (21-25) the Panthers had little trouble containing the fast-break minded Pierre Moran. Defense has been very good that last three games. It was all Jeff Jones' night last Tuesday as he corralled 18 rebounds and scored 10 points to lead the freshmen to a 36-32 victory over Warsaw.
