Girls win NLC title by defeating Concord
By DALLAS BEAN The 1980-81 North Wood girls basketball team wrapped up and sealed its first Northern Lakes Conference championship by defeating the Concord Minutewomen 58-34 before a large “Parents' Night " crowd in the Panther Pit last Thursday. North Wood reached that plateau by going undefeated in NLC action with a perfect 7-0 record. The Panthers' closest game was back on Dec. rs against Wawasee with a twopoint victory in triple overtime, 53-51. Their second closest contest was against Bremen in Lion Country on Nov. 20 by five, 49-44. The Panthers' largest margin of victory was over Plymouth by 39, 71-32 back on Dec 2. In the NLC, North Wood scored 402 points, an average of 57.4 a game, while holding opponents to 285, an average of 40.7 a game. 1) The North Wood Panthers have now won 17 straight to be ranked fifth in the

"That’s what you work for.” Commenting on the Concord game, Coach Neff said, “At times we had &>me intensity but we played a low-key game. Now it’s time to prepare for the sectional.” Game scoring honors were won by North Wood’s Brenda Ervin with 16 points. The 5-6 junior forward and guard was 7 of 12 from the field for 58 percent and perfect at the line going 2 for 2. Seniors Ann Van Dyke and Steph Beck shared second place for the Panthers with 10 points. The big difference in the game had to be North Wood’s bench which accounted for 18 of the team’ stotal 58 points. North Wood shot 38 percent by swishing 25 of 66 shots. Vonda Mullet, a 5-11 forward, had 11 caroms and Candy Bontrager collected seven. In assists, which is A very strong part of North Wood’s offensive game plan, the leaders were Ervin and Beck with four each, backed up by Mullet amd Bontrager with three each. Concord’s offensive attack, since losing Shelly Robert with a shoulder injury which will require surgery, was led /by 5-6 senior guard Tracy Gallbreath with 14. Galbreath was 7 of 15 from the field. The second Minutewoman in double digits was 5-8 senior Brenda Baskervill with 10 points. Concord shot 31 percent for the game in hitting 16 of 52 field goals attempted. A tight pressure defense by North Wood caused two five-second calls against Concord and with two other buckets the Panthers jumped off to an 8-0 lead led by Ann Van Dyke with six points. The explosive opening caused Concord Coach Millie Ferro to quickly call time out. Against Warsaw, North Wood had to rely on mostly outside shooting. Thursday, the inside game came early opening the outside. Concord’s first bucket came at 4:38 by Tracy Galbreath. A nice assist from Vonda Mullet, who played a super assist and rebound game, to Brenda Ervin put the lead back to eight, 10-2. Concord outscorecf North Wood 6-2 in three minutes to pull within four, 12-8 with 1:33 left. A missed two-shot foul by Mullet and then later a bucket by Brenda Baskerville brought Concord within two, 12-10. after one. North Wood, in putting up 20 shots, had only six drop for 30 percent. Concord faired a little better shooting 33 percent by hitting 5 of 15. An assist from Mullekt to Beck, Ervin's pop shot and Van Dyke’s fourth bucket put North Wood up by eight again, 18-10. in the opening two minutes of the second quarter. Concord scored its first bucket at 4:11 and added a second before a threeminut e drought for North Wood ended on a bucket by Candy Bontrager to put six points between the Panthers and Minutewomen with the score 20-14. Girls defeat Warsaw
By DALLAS BEAN The North Wood girls basketball team defeated a young but improving Warsaw club 62-49 in Tiger Coqntry last Tuesday The last two conference victories were similar in some ways. Against both Goshen and Warsaw Val Walter had a bucket at the buzzer to put Northwood up by two at halftime by the same score of 29-27. The Panthers' big quarter against the Redskins was the fourth. The quarter in which North Wood put Warsaw away was the third plus the middle of the fourth The North Wood Panthers remained undefeated in 16 games and unbeaten in the conference at 6-0 The Warsaw Tiger girls, with their worst record in many seasons, are 3-4 in conference action and 6-10 overall. The evening scoring honors went to North Wood’s Brenda Ervin with 16 points followed by Steph Beck, the other member of the Panther scoring duo. with 15. Ervin . the's-6 junior forward, accounted for her 16 from the field hitting 8 of 19 for 42 percent. Beck, the 5-6 senior was 7 of 16 from.the field for 44 percent and 1 of 4 at the line. North Wood shot a good 42 percent from the field hitting 28 of 66 shots. The Panthers, a little cool at the line, shot 46 percent hitting 6 of 13 Warsaw was led by their outstanding senior forward Cindy Horn who led the Tiger attack with 18. Also in double figures was Shawn Kehler with 12, Horn, in shooting 44 percent from the field, made 7 of 16. She added 4 of 7 at the charity stripe. * Warsaw, in putting upjiine less shots than North Wood. shot 35 percent for the game The Tigers were cooler than North Wood at the line, making only 9 of 22 for 41 percent. Candy Bontrager drilled a bucket, putting North Wood on top 10-9. After North Wood appeared to be coming out of its slump Warsaw quickly called a time out. Warsaw committed a turnover on its possession giving North Wood a chance to go up three. The Panthers worked the clock down as with one tick left, Ervin put a shot up that didn't fall but she still had a chance to score, after being fouled by Bricker. Ervin, still in a shooting slump, missed both free throws as North Wood remained up by one, 10-9. North Wood opened the second quarter by jumping off ...to a five-point lead, 14-9. Warsaw wasn’t going to let the game set out of hand and came back on buckets by Horn and Harmon to cut the Panther margin to one, 14-13. Ann Van Dyke, who has been hitting well at the line, sank two putting North Wood up 16-13. The Panthers later increased their lead to seven on a nice assist from Mullet to Beck and on Bontrager, sinking a two-shot foul. Lori Hoffer and Beck traded buckets before a possible three-point play by Horn made it 22-17. Horn missed the free throw and the Panthers stayed up by five. The lead was cut to one, 22-21, later after a minute and a half of play wheft Bricker scored four unanswered points' to keep Warsaw alive. Ervin’s long swished and Walter hitting the front of a one and one gave North Wood a little breathing room up four, 25-21. Concord, in making 4 of 10 for the quarter, was 9 of 25 for the half hitting just 36 percent. Three players, two from North Wood, Ervin and Van Dyke, shared first half scoring honors with Galbreath of Concord as each accounted for eight points. —Both teams traded a bucket in .the first minute of the third quarter. Starting at 6:33 North Wood scored niiie unanswered points to pull away to a 20point lead, 41-21. With 49 seconds left Concord finally recorded its second field goal on a bucket by Baskerville and added its third 10 seconds later as Galbreath made the last Minutewoman bucket to trail 16, 41-25. The scoring was even in North Wood’s blitz. Kelly Gessinger recorded her second field goal with 23 seconds left and with just two ticks left Ervin hit her third of five to give the Panthers a 20fwijnt lead after three, 45-25. North Wood shot 37 percent in hitting 7 of 19 while Concord, hitting only 3 of 10, shot 30 percent,. The fourth quarter has only to decide the final margin of victory. Concord pulled within 18 once, at 4:51, 47-29, and twice at 19, 51-32 and 53-34 before the Panther subs outscored Concord 5-0 for the final margin of 24, 58-34. After playing at West Noble Monday North Wood will open its sectional tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. against Bethany Christian.

Horn, answered Ervin’s bucket but North Wood’s momentum for the ' second half was provided as Val Walter hit nothing but net with three ticks left, sending North Wood into the dressing room up two, 29-27, the same way the Goshen game ended at halftime. North Wood shot 26 percent in the opening quarter, hitting 5 of 19. The Panthers raised the percentage in the second to 54 by hitting 7 of 13. So at halftime the Panthers were shooting 37 percent by swishing 12 of 32. Warsaw, with a cool 28 percent in the opening on hitting 4 of 14, increased that in the second to 41 percent on making 7 of 17. The Tigers were shooting 35 percent at halftime by sinking 11 of 31 attempts. The two teams were even at the free throw line, both making 5, with North Wood getting two less chances than Warsaw’s 10. After Mindy Hoskins tied the game for the fourth time, North Wood started breathing fire as the Panthers outscored Warsaw 6-4 in the first two minutes but still let Warsaw stav close Ervin made her first of 4 for 5 and after both teams totaled three errors, Van Dyke scored her only bucket of the game on a turnaround jumper, making the Panther lead six, 37-31. Hoskins was fouled in the act of shooting Mullet for her third. Hoskins could make just the front to cut the lead to five, 37-32. Ervin had pumped in her second and after Warsaw turned the ball over for the third time Coach Mary Hurley quickly wanted a time out with North Wood up seven and threatening a blowout with the score 39-32. A minute after the time out Hoskins, with her second of three, brought the Tigers back within five, 39-34. Ervin, at 2:40, received an excellent inbounds pass for a bucket to make the lead seven again, 41-23. North Wood was denying the Tigers the inside game on defense while slowly increasing the lead on offense. Warsaw, with a two-shot foul by Horn, pulled back to five, 41-36, before Patsy Wenger, who was 3 of 5 for the quarter and 2 for 2 in the first two and a half minutes, led a charge, that outscored the Tigers 11-4 to open a 12-point advantage after three, 52-40. t . Beck’s second of two buckets came on an inbounds pass at the buzzer. North Wood, in burning the nets at a 64 percent clip, was cashing in 11 of 17 shots. The Panthers blew the Goshen game open by sinking 8 of 14 for 57 percent in the fourth. Warsaw, meanwhile, was shooting 38 percent connecting 5 of 13. North Wood added 1 of 2 at the black line as Warsaw was 3 for 4 as the Panthers outscored Warsaw 23-13. “We had to make a choice on defense," Warsaw Coach Hurley said. “We had their inside game shut off with a zone in hopes they wbuldn’t hit from their outside. We re not quick enough to man-to-man. With them we just got ' burned.” >; ■ The turning point of the game, according to the Warsaw coach was, “our letdown in the third. That was the game." “A good team has to have balance and we’ve had different girls come through in different games,”. Coach Steve Neff said. “Tonight it was Brertia and Patsy Wenger coming off the bench in the third.” The fourth got off to a sluggish start as just four points were scored in the first three minutes. The North Wood bucket was by Walter and Warsaw's was by Trudi Bricker for her only * bucket of the game A fine inside pass from Bontrager to Kelly Gessinger and two buckets by Mullet, her third and fourth with the last at 3:58, propelled North Wood to its largest lead of the game. Coach Neff cleared the bench with about l: 30 to play as in the final minute North Wood was outscored 5-0 but it made no difference.
