Wrestlers place second in tourney

• The Panther wrestlers tuned up for their tourney by traveling to Northridge where they met and defeated the Raiders 45-23. This was the best effort by the entire senior portion of the team. All six seniors won easily and five of their victories came by way of a pin. In all, the wrestlers won eight of the 13 Weight classes with Jon Flickinger and Greg Urednick also scoring victories with a pin.

Sophomore champ “Hold it right there,” is what North Wood wrestling coach Louis Bonacorsi seems to be telling Greg Urednick in action during wrestling invitational action last Saturday at the Panther Pit. Urednick, a sophomore, had the best day of his young varsity career as he pinned top-seeded Terry Hill of Jimtown in the final round. He defeated Joe Warstler of Fairfield 6-2 in the first round and followed with a 13-6 win over Phil Stein of LaVille. Coach Bonacorsi is shown encouraging Urednick during an injury time out.. place. i “We seemed as though we forgot to start wrestling,’ Coach Bonacorsi said. “We were 73 points behind LaVille and the day looked like a loss. Our boys regrouped and got into the flow of things. “Although we were out of the team title, I was proud of our boys who knew they were a lot better than fourth,” the coach added. The Panthers found themselves 45 points behind at the end of the next round. As they looked at the final session they were "in second place by only six points over John Adams. In the last round, led by their three champions, the Panthers closed the gap even more by winning seven of 10 matches and LaVille won by 51 points. The runner-up honor was the best finish by the Panthers in three years. Team scores were: LaVille 192%, North Wood 161%, Adams 144, LaSalle 134%, Lakeland 128, Memorial 118, Jimtown 89, Fairfield 76. At 98 pounds Jon Flickinger won his first varsity champponship in his three years of action. Flickinger easily won his honors by scoring three pins on the day. He defeated Jim Johnston of Lakeland in 45 seconds, Todd Rengel of Adams in 1:20 “and pinned Rod McCollough of Memorial in 1:34 in the finals. His record is now 10-1. Greg Urdenick, a sophomore at 155, had his best performance yet in his young varsity career. He defeated Joe Warstler of Fairfield 6-2 in the first round and followed with a 13-6 win over Phil Stein of LaVille. Mullet is now 8-3. “These three boys have really improved and we are extremely proud of them,” Coach Bonacorsi said. Other place winners were Larry Mishler at 126 placing third. Mishler, the number one seed, was upset by Dave McNarney 7-6 in the second
round. Mishler bounced back with t more pins and came up with third pi honoffe. Mishler is now 10-2. The other Panther upset w as suffer by undefeated Jeff Kirkdorffer. He a had to settle for third place hon when he was defeated by John Mon of LaVille in the second round. Kr dorffer also came back with two m pins to place third. He is now 11-1 on season. Jeff Fervida, a freshman, also plai third by posting three pins in his thr victories. While losing only one mat in the second round, Fervida is now which is excellent for a freshman varsity action. “Although this was Jeff's first pearance in tourney action, he i made his presence known.” Coa Bonacorsi said. Wayne Maggard at 177 placed th' by posting three wins to one loss to t tourney champion in the second rom Maggard is now 7-4. Other place winners for the Panth were: Roland Rohrer, fourth at 1" who scored two pins while losing [ matches^This was a good finish as wrestled well.
