Incumbents lose In area cities Incumbent mayors were defeated in re-election bids in surrounding cities. At Goshen. Republican challenger Max Chlddister defeated incumbent Democrat Steven Chisick 3,123-2,217. Hie GOP swept all five council seats. 3 Elkhart mayor Peter Sarantos was defeated by GOP challenger Eleanor Kesim 5,479-4,933. Democrats retained control of the council 5-4. . Four-time Warsaw mayor Paul “Mike” Hodges upset Democrat in- ■ cumbent H. Dale Tucker by only 23 votes. Only one Democrat was elected to the council. 1 Charles Glaub was unopposed for a fourth term as mayor of Plymouth. The Democrat mayor will, however, have a Republican council. Margaret Prickett was defeated in her bid for a fifth term as mayor of 1 Mishawaka. The GOP incumbent was defeated by Democrat Robert Kovach ’ 6,709-6,243. South Bend council president Roger Parent was eleeted mayor over Republican H. Chris Overgaard 18,819-9,590. Crop loss assistance offered Farmers in Elkhart County may apply for emergency loan assistance to recover crop losses resulting from July drought conditions. Farmers in the county who suffered at least a 20 percent actual crop loss and who lack other sources of credit may apply for assistance to the County FHA Office in Goshen. Loan eligibility will be determined by the FHA and the amount of money borrowed cannot exceed the actual value of the total crop loss, Harry Weiland of the county FHA Office said. All loans are made with a five percent interest rate, with the possibility of major adjustment costs being added, he said. Farmers have until August 8,1980 to submit loan request applications to the county office, located at 17746 C.R. 34, Goshen. County welcomes Michigan rebels Cass County, Michigan, residents wishing to secede from Michigan and join Indiana were welcomed by the Elkhart County Commissioners The commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution of welcome expressing sympathy with those favoring secession to “get away from higher taxes, unemployment and the government machines to become a Hoosier rather than a Wolverine.” The resolution welcomes “our friends from the land of Great Lakes to make a change and pull up your stakes; why should you pay the bills for those who live in Detroit when you can join Elkhart County, a move most • adroit.” Cass County commissioners, meanwhile, are expected to vote at their ' November meeting on whether to put the secession question on the 1980 election ballot. If the commissioners fail to do so, a petitioning process will need to begin in which 10 percent of the county’s 40,000 population must sign to place the measure on the ballot. New Circuit Court judge named Gene Duffin will be the new judge of Elkhart Circuit Court. The Goshen attorney accepted the nomination of Elkhart and Goshen bar associations to succeed David Redding, who resigned last month. Elkhart County Republican Chairman Roy Rogers will recommend Duffin’s appointment to Gov. Otis Bowen, who is expected to make the appointment. Duffin said that he plans no radical changes but will work with other county judges to unify court procedures such as bonding. Duffin will serve only until next year’s election. Added highway funds approved The Elkhart County Council approved an additional appropriation of SIOO,OOO in federal revenue sharing funds for the county highway department last Saturday. I The additional funds will allow road work already planned to be completed. Rising costs would otherwise have prevented some of the work to be finished. The highway department appropriation was included in about $150,000 of additional appropriations approved. The building and grounds department will receive an extra $43,000 and both the county coroner and the health . department will receive about $2,500. A request for $2,975 from the county clerk for anew typewriter, files and cabinets was rejected. ' ■

citizens in the city of Nappanee.” - It was a difficult election for incumbents throughout the state as Mellinger was among 21 incumbents, 14 Democrats and seven Republicans, unseated at the polls. Nappanee voters have also been hard on incumbents in the past. Bag Pippen and Pat Sinclair were unseated in their respective re-election bids in 1972 and in 1968. The last incumbent mayor to successfully win re-election was J. Maxwell Clouse in 1960.
