John Mellinger Mayor John is the present mayor, and one of Nappanee's alltime best. Hisaccomplishments in the past four years include hard-surfacing over five miles of city streets; annexation cjf over 60 acres of industrial and residential sites; holdirg the line on taxes; enactment of effective dog and exotic animal ordinances, and a host of other achievements. John is I life-long resident of Nappanee, and a member of thef irst Brethren Church, Chamber of Commerce, Indiana end American Health Care Associations, American Legion Post 154, and many other organizations. He is uniquely qualified by way of his four years experience as a City Councilman, his four years of experience c$ a member of the Board of Public Works and Safety, and his record as the incumbent mayor. He know* Nappanee, what makes it tick, its people, and whatits people expect in leadership. John, who is the Administer of the LuAnn Nursing Horr®, lives with his wife, Mary Jo, at 257 N. Hartman St., Napanee. They are the parents of seven children. He is a graduate of Nappanee High School, attended Ashland College for three years, and graduated from the Indiana University Health Facility Administrators School. He served with the U.S. Air Force during World War 11.

CLERK-TREASURER AARON A. FORSYTHE With his office management-accounting background, and experience, Aaron Forsythe is qualified for the office of Clerk-Treasurer. He has worked 10 years for the Elkhart County Election Board, compiling votes in all precincts. Locally, he has worked for Holiday Rambler, Robinson & Price Seedsmen, Vitreous Steel and Nappanee Milling, handling various types of office duties. Aaron and his wife, Dorothy, who live at 751 E. Walnut St., are the parents of four children. He is a graduate of Winona Business College, a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion, Elkhart County 40 & 8, and various other organizations. He served in the military for three and one-half years. Forsythe has the pulse of the people, the personality and ability to get along with people, and is dedicated to becoming Nappanee’s best-ever Clerk-Treasurer. "I think I can be an asset to the city in the handling of the duty of the office of clerk-treasurer,” Forsythe said.

Councilman - 2nd Ward Lewis Swihart Lewie is 30 years old, and he and his wife, Deb, and their two children, Andrew, 8, and Wenda, 11, are a vital part of Nappanee's young marrieds set. They are members of the Nappanee Church of the Brethren, and Lewie is Plant Superintendent at Fairmont Homes. They reside at 556 N. Main St. Lewie excelled in basketball and football for the Nappanee Bulldogs, graduating in 1967. He has the street sense necessary for the stability of the City Council, and the enthusiasm and diligence to be a leader.

Councilman-At-Large Mary Catherine "Kay" Stutzman Nappanee has been "home” for Kay for her entire life; Kay’s Beauty Shop (which she has owned and operated for 33 years) is a Nappanee institution. Kay and her husband, Arden, live at 451 N. Hartman St. They have a daughter, Rita, who lives near Lafayette and is the mother of four daughters. A great advocate of Nappanee Civic Theatre, Kay was president for two terms, a board member for nine years, and actively involved in its many productions. She produced four plays, and served as vice-president of the Indiana Theatre League. Kay and Arden attend the Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir for seven years. Always a lady, she always has an intelligent question or comment, the ability to analyze complicated problems and the fortitude to stick by her guns. Kay says,’’For most of my life I have enjoyed the benefits of living in Nappanee, and now I would like to contribute something in return by serving as your Councilperson At Large."

Councilman Ist Ward Samuel L. Sheets Sam Sheets is one of Nappanee's bright young men. A lifelong resident, and graduate of Manchester College, he is presently the manager of the First National Bank’s Nappanee Office. Sam, 30, his wife, Brenna, and their three children, live at 757 N. Main St. They are members of the Union Center Church of the Brethren. Sam is a member of Kiwanis, and the North Wood Captain's Club, and is active in ASA softball. The Sheets family tree dates back to the earliest settlers of our community. Sam is a 1967 graduate of Nappanee High School, and is a Nappaneean, through and through.

Councilman - 4th Ward P e 99Y J* Beer Peggy i. Beer, 48, is a former Councilman (72-74), and her civic activities and involvements would fill pages. Among them: past president, Thursday Club; past president, Nappanee Civic Theatre; Chairman, Nappanee Red Cross; director, Elkhart County Departmentof Public Welfare for 10 years; member, Nappanee City Plan Commission, etc., etc., etc. Peg is married to Bernie Beer, a partner in McCormick Motors. She is the mother of three plus three, grandmother of one, counsellor of many, and champion for Nappanee. A graduate of Warsaw High School, she has served as secretary of the Nappanee Democrat Club, and has served on the election board for 10 years. The Beers reside at 302 E. Market St., and are members of the First Brethren Church.
