Local GOP meets
State Sen. Richard Shank (standing, background) was the keynote speaker as Nappanee Republicans met Tuesday morning to plan the fail campaign. Shank said that the secret of winning elections is to meet as many people as possible and to speak positively of the things one believes in. GOP mayoral candidate Bob Callander noted that September 22 is the last day for voters to register in Nappanee. He announced acquisition of campaign headquarters in the H.R, Block office at 112 E. Market beginning October 6. Callander told the breakfast group that he has been interviewing present city employees and plans to try to visit every household in Nappanee. Also featured at the meeting was county GOP chairman Roy Rogers.

John St., Nappanee, will replace Teleschow on the commission. The Nappanee Plan Commission has recommended to the Council that 50 acres of land be annexed to the city. The land is located south of the present city limits, and east of SR 19. It will include a proposed housing project being planned by Ray Hopewell and Roger Buss. She stated that she felt it was a good season, overall, and expressed her appreciation for hte pool staff and the cooperation of the Park Board. 480 persons took lessons at the pool this summer. Both ordinances passed first reading. Ordinance NO. 760, which amended the former city zoning ordinance, passed on third and final reading, as did Ordinance NO. 782, which prohibits the construction of private wells within the city. The council also voted unanimously to adopt three resolutions. The first is a resolution approving transfers for the Motor Vehicle Highway Fund, the Police Dept., and the Emergency .JVgpdical Service Department. The second is an Inducement Resolution for Shannon Homes, giving the firm permission to proceed with acquisition and construction of the economic development facilities. The third resolution passed concerned the acquisition, construction and equipping of an economic development facility by McGill Manufacturing Company, Inc. In a final act of business, the council members approved payment of claims agains thte city, in amounts totaling $42,455.83. The Nappanee City Council regularly meets the first and third Monday of ' each month, at 7:30 p.m., at the Nappanee Municipal Center. All meetings are open to the public.

She was also commended, once again, for her quick action in an emergency situation earlier in the summer, when a small child was pulled from the pool and Jane administered life-saving techniques. She stated that she felt it would be good to require that all pool personnel pass the CPR course. The Dept, of Natural Resources has approved the bid of Delp Electric, Plymouth, for $31,600 for the lighting project at the Stauffer Park diamond. This project should be started late in September. It is part of the federally funded golf course project. The Nappanee Park and Recreation Board meets the first Wednesday of each month, at 6:30 p.m., at the Nappanee Municipal Center. The meetings are open to the public.
