Tax exemption deadline near
State Representative Dean R. Mock (R-Elkhart) reminded local senior citizens that July 2 is the filing deadline for the circuit breaker and the elderly credit for sales tax on utilities. “The General Assembly has enacted tax exemptions specifically for senior citizens, but often people are not aware of them or don’t realize they must be reapplied for each year,” Mock explained. To qualify for the circuit breaker, one must be aged 65 or over or disabled, and must have lived during 1978 in a homestead subject to Indiana property tax, Mock explained. 1978 household income must have been less than SSOOO, he continued. The claim is filed on Form CB-40 Taxpayers in the same age bracket may also qualify for the elderly credit
NIPSCO files petition
Northern Indiana Public Service Company has filed a petition with the Public Service Commission of Indiana to permit NIPSCO to track an additional annual increase in purchased gas costs of $766,577. NIPSCO filed for the additional increase iri gas costs, above those requested in its petition filed on May 24, 1979, after notification of the increase by Midwestern Gas Transmission Company, one of its five pipeline suppliers. for sales tax on utilities, which is a $25 per person credit, Mock said. Senior citizens must have lived in Indiana for at least six months during the tax year and have an adjusted gross income of less than $15,000 for a married couple, or less than $7500 for married taxpayers filing separately, to qualify for the credit. “The utility credit is normally claimed on the Form IT-40, line 32, or Form IT-40A, line 27,” Mock explained. “However, taxpayers who also qualify for the circuit breaker or who don’t have to file an IT form may claim the credit on line 211 of Form CB-40.” Mock encouraged all eligible taxpayers to apply for the credit, and noted forms and assistance in completing them is available from the Indiana Department of Revenue by calling 1-800-382-9800.
using natural gas for spaceheating (160,800 cubic feet per year) will experience an increase of 49 cents a year or a little more than four cents a month, ■ in addition to the previously requested, increase. The average NIPSCO residential customer using natural gas for purposes other than spaceheating (38,200 cubic feet annually) would pay about 10 cents a year more or about one cent a month. Adustments in gas rates to NIPSCO customers, usually upward and sometimes downward, have occurred and will continue to occur as rates charged NIPSCO by its pipeline suppliers change, as they have and will under the provisions of the National Energy Act. This is the eighth purchsased gas adjustment filed by NIPSCO in 1979. Five have been Increases and three were decreases The net effect of these filings tb the average NIPSCO residential customer using natural gas for spacefieating and other purposes Is an annual increase of ss7.s7—from $425.85 at the beginning of the year to $483.42, should this petition be approved as filed.
