project because more than half of the 24 million people who are believed to have hypertension (high blood pressure) are unaware they have the condition. Left untreated, hypertension can lead to heart failure, stroke and kidney failure. The screening takes only a few minutes, is completely painless and the results are obtained immediately. People whose readings are borderline or slightly elevated will be asked to return for a re-screening. If both readings are elevated, or if the initial measurement shows a significantly high blood pressure, the person will be advised to see his physician for further evaluation. In conjunction with the screenings, Thornbutgs is sponsoring a hypertension information panel at the North Village Mall. Personnel knowledgable in the care of hypertension will be available to answer questions regarding the disease. The panel will run from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, January 10 through Thursday, January 12 in the Mall area.
New apartments completed The newest addition to Nappanee's apartment development has been completed The Northwood Apartments, located at the southeast corner of State Road IS and County Road 52 adjacent to the Village Apartments, consists of 48 one-bedroom units designed specifically for the elderly. Five of the apartments have been constructed specifically for handicapped persons. The kitchen, bathroom and all doorways are designed for persons in wheelchairs. In addition to a large community building with laundry facilities to serve the project, a small bus will serve the tenants by providing them with daily bus service to downtown shopping areas. The apartments have been developed under the Federal Housing Administration Section Eight program which provides rental assistance to those elderly and handicapped persons needing such assistance. Under the program, the tenant is required to pay a maximum of 25 percent of their income for rent. Representatives of the First Community Mortgage Corporation of Mishawaka, the firm managing the new apartments, announced that 30 of the 48 units have already been rented.
