Gessinger honored by General Telephone Company
Robert E. Gessinger, a Service Supervisor-Facilities General Telephone, Elkhart, was recently recognized by the company for helping make this community a better place in which to live. Gessinger will receive special recognition and will be presented with an award from Albert E. Beckwith, president of the company, at the General Telephone North Central Division Awards Banquet. According to Gessinger, he probably would not have become so involved in doing things for others if it had not been for his son’s handicap. His 13-year-old was born deaf. It was approximately seven years ago that Gessinger became actively involved with a group of parents whose children attended the Indiana School for the Deaf at Indianapolis. He was selected to chair a committee to study ways and means of securing transportation for the children attending the school. Through Gessinger’s efforts the South Bend bus service for the Indiana School for the Deaf was established, the bus was chartered, and pickup points were established in South Bend and Rochester, Indiana, covering a seven-county area. Forty-four students rode the bus that first year with two chaperones accompanying them on every trip. Gessinger is presently maintaining close contact with legislators to try to get a 1978 House bill passed that will pay for transportation for the deaf children to the special school. Working closely with the South Bend

Excise tax on phone bills is down
Inflation-battered consumers will receive some relief in 1978—8360 million in savings, thanks to the steady decline of the federal excise tax on telephone bills, United Telephone announced today. Beginning January 1, this tax drops from five per cent of the bill to four per cent. The decrease started several years ago at the urging of the telephone industry for Congressional action, and will continue declining one per cent annually until January 1, 1982, when the levy is eliminated. The tax savings represents the estimated difference between what customers would have paid in 1978 at the five per cent rate, and what they will pay at the new four per cent rate. About S6O million of the total will be

saved by customers of Independent telephone companies, according to estimates by the U.S. Independent Telephone Association. The remainder of the savings will apply to Bell System customers. The association represents the country’s 1,600 non-Bell System telephone companies serving more than 29 million telephones—one out of every five in the nation. The excise tax was first imposed by Congress during World War I as a “temporary” measure. Although repealed briefly after the war, it was reinstituted during the Depression and has continued ever since at rates as high as 15 per cent on local service and 25 per cent on long distance calls. From 1954 to 1971 it stood at 10 per cent.
