Diana Davis to manage new concept in shoe sales

Diana Davis will be the manager for the “Store Next Door,” Metzler’s latest expansion in the retail footwear business. The “Store Next Door” will be located north of Metzlers’ main store at 111 South Main in Nappanee. An extensive remodeling program will begin shortly for this new store with an opening between the two buildings for traffic flow. Anew concept of casual and fashion shoes and accessories for women will be stocked in the new store. Some of the well-known brands are Aigner, Connie, Bass and Adidas. A December opening is planned for the new store. Davis has had previous experience in retail shoes at C&H Shoe store in Marion, Indiana, and has had several years of training at the Metzler Shoe Company of Nappanee. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Metzler of 556 West Vanßuren of Nappanee. Metzlers’ last expansion was in 1969 when the Annex South was opened for Metzlers’ discount operation.

United issues alert United Telephone is asking its customers to help keep telephones working. Because of recent malicious damage to phone cables and other equipment throughout the state, United is issuing this alert to customers: People in unmarked vehicles are not authorized to work on telephone equipment. If you see private vehicles near phone poles, lines, cables, microwave towers, etc., pelase report it immediately to local authorities. They’ll need to know the location, vehicle description and license number if possible. United also suggests that before repair people enter your home, you obtain their names from company photo-I.D. cards. “When telephones are out of service, customers' lives and welfare could be at stake,” states George White, the firm’s president. “We regret inconveniences caused by these outages and ask everyone’s help in preventing future damage,” he states. Recent malicious damage caused major outages in the United exchanges of Monterey-Leiters Ford, Knox, Hamlet, North Jdson, San Pierre, Wilkinson, and Knightstown. Other outages due to such damage have been scattered throughout United’s operating areas.
Employment News The number of unemployment insurance claims rose 2,796 last week to 37,366. The year ago total was 54,292. John F. Coppes of the Indiana Employment Security Division said that small scattered layoffs caused initial claims to increase 294 to 4,930. Regular continued claims were up following the Labor Day holiday in the previous week. All regular claims were 1,125 more at 30,316. Coppes said extended benefit claims totaled 3,517, up 1,988 as vouchers for new claims were released. Special unemployment assistance claims dropped 286 to 3,242, he added.

Puckett transferred by Holiday Rambler

Police log. . . Four traffic accidents have occurred in Nappanee during the past week, causing minor injuries to three persons, and resulting in estimated property damages of $2895. Two vehicles were involved in a September 19,9:57 p.m. accident which occurred in front of 1150 E. Market St. The mishap involved autos driven by Patrick Mishler, R. 1, Nappanee, and Gary K. Burkholder, also of R. 1. Mishler, who was east bound on Market St., was attempting ot turn left and turned in front of the Burkholder auto. Burkholder struck Mishler's car, causing damages of SIOOO to his car and $1250 to Mishler’s vehicle. Mishler suffered from glass in his eye, and passengers in the Burkholder car, Phyllis Burkholder and Loraine Schrock, both received bumps on their legs. On September 22,7:25 p.m., a vehicle driven by James E. Hoover, 357 N. Main St., Nappanee, struck the parked trailer owned by the Nappanee Council of Religious Education, located on E. Van Buren St. Hoover was backing from an alley, misjudged the distance and backed into the trailer. Estimated damages of $l2O were done to the auto, and SSO to the trailer. The intersection of Canary and Meadow Lark Streets was the site of a September 24 accident, which involved a jeep driven by Dennis H. Hershberger, 302 Mack Drive, and an auto driven by Harvey M. Miller, Lot 57, Shamrock Meadows, Nappanee. • Hershberger, who was westbound, attempted to turn into a drivewav. failing to see the auto. He struck the car, causing estimated damges of S3OO to the car and none to the jeep. A horse-drawn vehicle and a car were involved in a September 24 accident, which occurred on North Main St. Driver of the buggy was Mose Yoder, R. 3, Nappanee, and June J. Slivers, 202 W. Reed St., Nappanee, was the driver of the car. Yoder was northboudn and preparing to pass the car. His buggy struck the vehicle, causing damages estimated at $175. No damage was done to the buggy.
