Employment news Unemployment claims are down The number of unemployment insurance claims filed last week dropped 5,104 from the week before to 34,570. John F. Coppes of the Indiana Employment Security Division, said fewer new layoffs, more recalls and the Labor Day holiday contributed to decreases in regular and special unemployment assistance initial and •continued claims. Extended benefit continued claims rose following the national reinstatement of the program, he noted. Coppes said regular initial claims were 664 fewer at 4,636. All regular claims were down 4,081 to 29,191. Extended benefit claims increased 99 to 1,529 and special unemployment assistance claims were 1.054 fewer at 3,528.

Service Commission of Indiana to enter an order approving the purchase of two billion cubic feet of supplemental natural gas for delivery this winter, according to Edmund A. Schroer, NIPSCO president and chief executive officer. “On August 31, we entered into a purchase agreement with Michigan Consolidated Gas Company to augment our gas supplies during the 1977-78 winter season,” said Schroer. “On September 1, we completed negotiation of a transportation agreement with Michigan-Wisconsin Pipe Line Com-pany-one of our five suppliers—to deliver the gas to our system through existing connections. The gas purchase agreement provides that Michigan Consolidated will sell NIPSCO a total volume of two billion cubic feet of gas during a maximum period of 60 consectuivd days between November 21, 1977 and January 19, 1978. "For months now, we have taken every opportunity to build up our gas supplies in preparation for the coming winter,” said the utility president. We expect to have all storage facilities filled by the onset of the winter heating season. “Although plans approved by the Federal Power Commission have curtailed our daily flow gas this winter, we should receive almost 700 million cubic feet of gas per day from our suppliers,” Schroer continued. “Barring any unforeseen curtailments by our suppliers or diversions by the federal government, we expect to be able to meet all firm gas commitments for residential, commercial and industrial customers.” NIPSCO’s petition also asks the Public Service Commission to enter an order providing for a supplemental gas tracking procedure permitting the utility to recover $2,934,708 in additional gas supply costs. Schroer emphasized that the company would not realize any profit from this supplemental gas tracking adjustment, if approved by the PSC.
