Volleyball teams open season

North Wood High School opened this season’s volleyball play with a loss to Penn, 6-15 and 11-14. In that second game, North Wood closed the gap on Penn, but time ran out for the Pantherettes. Leading server in the match was junior Kelly Geroge, who served for five points. Junior Laurie Beck led in sets and senior Ann Garl was the leading spiker. 6 and 15-13 to even their record at 1-1. Junior Jo KloU led her team with 11 serving points in the two games, closely followed by Laurie Beck with nine points. Beck was also the leading setter. Leading spiker for North Wood was Ann Garl, followed by Kim Bussard. Senior Jan Grimm also added to the spiking attack. Also seeing varsity action were seniors Tammy Adams, Kathy Eby and Karen Moyer and Juniors Lynette Miller and Melody Rohrer. It took three games to determine the winner of the NorthWood-Concord

match, with Concord taking the first game, 15-13, the Pantherettes coming back to win the second 15-11, and Concord easily winning the third game, 15-6. Beck collected 13 points for the Panthers, and Jo Klotz successfully set up eight times. Garl was the leading blocker, and Garland Kelly George combined to provide most of North Wood’s spikes. Also starting for North Wood in all three games were Kim Bussard and Kathy Eby. Starters in the second game were Jan Grimm, and Tammy Adams. Karen Moyer, and Lynette Miller also played in the Concord Match. B TEAM The B-team lost to Concord 13-15, 1511 and 6-15 in their only match of last week. Leading server was sophomore Lori Gross, who served for 18 points. Junior Melody Rohrer was the leading setter. Sherry Burkholder was the leading blocker with four, and the leading spiker with four successful spikes. Also playing for North Wood were Ginger Borgman, Jeannie Dußois, Kethy Blosser, Stephanie Beck, Karen Jill Myers, Judy Lantis and Retha Burkholder. JV Pack wins three North Wood's junior varsity cross country squad put three more victories on their season record with wins against Elkhart Memorial, 22-33, Plymouth, 25-32, and Rochester, 19-37. Dale Lehman led the Elkhart Memorial meet with a 14:27. Other teammates and their accomplishments were: Phil Rosentrater, third with a 14:43. Dean Anglemyer, fourth with a 14:51. Larry Sawyer, fifth with a 15:06. Brian Eby, 11th with a 16:09. Paul Eby, 12th with a 16:11. Bart Curtis, 18th with a 19:36. Dean Anglemyer was the first Panther across the line in the dual meet with Rochester and Plymouth. Dean had a 15:01 time for the first place finish. Phil Rosentrater put in a strong second half for fifth at 15:26. Larry Sawyer was sixth at 15:29. Brian Eby was eighth at 16:05, and Paul Eby helped to sew up the meet with ninth place at 16:07. Jerry Huber was 13th at 16:43. Kirt Hunsberger was 18th at 17:45. Bart Curtis was 20th at 20:27.

Good showing for "Pack" Run on Ox Bow course

North Wood’s top-notch cross country team traveled to Elkhart Saturday to compete in the Elkhart Central Invitational. The Black Pack came home with third place (70), finishing behind Elkhart Central (55) and Elkhart Memorial, (66) and topping South Bend Riley, (108), Ft. Wayne

Places at Nationals

Kris Golden, a freshman at Wawasee High School, proudly displays the silver medal she won at the recent National Water. Ski Championships at Berkeley, California. Kris placed second in the girls division trick skiing, sixth in jumping and fourth overall. Earlier this summer, she won overall titles at both the Indiana state tournament and regional tournament at Essex, 111. The granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Golden of Nappanee, Kris lives with her family, the Douglas Goldens, at Camelot Lake of the Valley near Milford.

Tennis teams each win two of three contests

The North Wood Panther varsity tennis team upped its season record to 5- (1-3 in NLC), with wins over Lakeland and Wawasee, while losing to Concord in action last week. In the Concord match, the Panthers lost 1-4, to drop their NLC record to 0-3. The results were as follows: Singles: Larry Bricker lost to Mike Saharian, 7-5, 1-6, 0-6; Mike Whitmer lost to Doug Acksel, 5-7, 0-6 and Chuck Lambdin defeated Randy Christophel, 6- 4-6, 6-3. Doubles: Mike Campbell and Chuck Sanders lost to Wally Mann and Doug Foster, 1-6, 6-3, 1-6, and Larry Yeater and Dave Lentz lost to Gary Hartnagel and Randy DeShone, 3-6, 1-6. The Panthers topped Lakeland 5-0 in a match played last Wednesday, with Larry Bricker defeating Darcy Pletcher, 6-1, 6-1, Mike Whitmer topping Tim Timmis, 6-1, 6-1 and Chuck Lambdin beating Mike Brill 7-6, 6-1, to sweep the singles competition. In doubles play, the team of Mike Campbell and Chuck Sanders won over Tim Masters and Tom Seman, 6-1, 6-0 and Larry Yeater and Steve Johnson topped Dale Sauver and Gerry Meek, 46, 6-2, 6-3. North Wood broke into the conference win column with the victory over Wawasee on Thursday, 3-2. In singles, Ed Boyts lost to J.D. Carl, 3-6,7-6,1-6; Mike Whitmer lost to Bryan Smith, 6-3, 3-6, 6-7, and Chuck Lambdin defeated Kent Trobaugh 7-6, 6-4. The doubles teams of Mike Campbell and Chuck Sanders defeated Mark Krug and Stu Bryant, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 and Larry Bricker and Larry Yeater topped Greg Carpenter and Doug Rassi, 7-5 and 6-3 JUNIOR VARSITY In Junior Varsity action, North Wood also lost to Concord, 2-6, while defeating both Lakeland and Wawasee. In singles competition, David Lentz lost to David Tucker, 7-10 (pro set), Kim Borgman defeated Logan Jones, 10-2, Kerry Kern defeated Kent Lawson, 10-6, Kevin Hall topped Tim Martin, 10-6 and Bart BeMiller defeated Mike Brannock, 10-8. The doubles team of Steve Johnson and Jeff Frantz defeated Mike Brannock and Dale Hoover, 10-1, and Wayne Weaver and Rick Gessinger topped Mike Wakeland and Tracy Bartow, 102. This week's matches were to put the Panthers against LaVille on the North Wood courts Monday, Goshen here Tuesday, North Wood at Elkhart Central Wednesday, and Plymouth at North Wood Thursday.

There were 30 runners in the event. In the junior race, the Panthers palced third, behind Memorial and Central, with a score of 36. Tony Layman, Dale Lehman and Dave Rummel finished 11th, 12tgh and 13th in the field of 23 runners. North Wood won the senior race, with a score of 16; Elkhart Central finished second with 22, Riley was third with 24. Mike McMurray finished third for the Panthers, Anglemeyer was sixth, Gongwer, seventh, Jeff Reed, 14th and Hershberger, 16th. There were 23 runners in the competition. The races were held on the rough new course at Ox Bow, which featured 2% mile of rolling hills. Coach Dennis Myers was pleased with "another good team effort and another day of running against top competition. It also gave us a chance to run on the new Ox Bow course —this will help us at sectional time in five weeks. With a few of our harriers a litUe more healthy and in better condition, we cot®* have easily challenged Central for the title.” The Pack was scheduled to face Warsaw and Bremen Tuesday, with the conference trophy at stake.

Golf sectional set for girls North Wood and Goshen the only high schools in Elkhart County to field girls golf teams this fall will pah ticipate in the Carroll Sectional in Allot County, according to the latest Indiani High School Athletic Association bulletin. The 10-team sectional field also will incorporate Angola, Bluffton, CarroH, East Noble, Huntington North, New Haven, Wawasee and Warsaw. There will be a dozen sectionals throughout the state Oct. 3.- . The first two teams and two low in* 1 dividual medalists from the Carroll Sectional will advance to the Hug* tington North Regional on Oct. lfc Other regionals will be hosted by Beq Davis, Jasper and LaPorte. The fifth annual state tournament, which will take the first two teams and individuals from each regional, will be Oct. 14 at the Elkhs Country Club in Munde.
