The Consumer Today Understanding the packaging of foods

JUDITH C. FORNEY, HOME ECONOMIST With rising costs on about every consumer product, consumers are beginning to call out more for reduced costs by eliminating the “frills” in the products, like fancy packaging. Ecology-minded consumers are also questioning the need for so much packaging on consumer products. Packaging products does mean use of material and energy resources, it does add to the cost of the product, and it does create waste, but like every issue, there are two sides. If you question the widespread use of packaging for consumer products, and feel that packaging is not necessary, then it is essential that you understand the basis for packaging the products; why are they packaged? Packaging has many different roles, and each consumer is concerned about packaging of his product for different reasons. Packages are containers, protectors, a sanitary means of distributing products, a method of communicating identity of the product, brand name, price, instructions, warnings, warranties, and other information about the product, a method of combining several units for sale, a method of preventing pilferage, and a way of dispensing the product and ap-

offer the consumer high quality, uniformity, ease and speed of preparation (about one-fourth as long as conventional foods), and they are not expensive. A governmental study has shown that of 158 convenience foods in the study, 42 were less expensive when prepared from convenience products than when prepared from fresh foods at home. Why is it that a packaged food can be cheaper than a fresh food? The Teason is-that marKefrngcepfa are reduced. The producer can products more because he has and year round market, and the rqanufacturer can process and store it for long periods of time without spoilage loss. Our society calls for variety in our diets, sanitary and safe foods, and prices which everyone can afford. Asa nation, we spend less money on a percent basis than most other countries in the world. We also have the resources for a better balanced diet because of the wide variety of nutrients available to us. All this is possible because we are able to package our food. Yes, it is time to call a halt to useless packaging, packing which really does serve no purpose, or could be used more economically, but it is necessary to put packaging in perspective, it does have an essential place in our economy, our life-style, and our well-being.

portioning it. Packaging is a definite advantage to the consumer. The federal government has regarded packaging of products so important that many rules and regulations have been passed which require specific information to be placed on the packaging material. Preservation, protection, and sanitation are provided on a massive scale by packaging. Packaging has allowed the American producer to produce T 4ptfee amotnos of food, package it • With Jittje waste or loss due to spoilage and sell it to the consumer who uses it at a later date. It is worth it to the consumer to pay for packaging. Packaging reduces the cost of the end product to the consumer. It also reduces risk in using and preparing a product, and gives a wider choice of products. Government and industry studies have shown that packaged foods are generally less expensive to the consumer than fresh foods. Industry can package vast amounts of food (the canning industry alone has more than 1,400 items) and sell it year around at a low cost. Convenience foods are an outcome of packaging. A convenience food is one in which one or more steps have been taken in the preparation of the product before the consumer purchases it. Convenience foods are a way of life in America because they
