approximated $1 billion. Street robbery, which accounts for about half of all robbery offenses, increased 35 percent from 1968 to 1973. During the same period residence robbery increased 64 percent, chain store robbery increased 167 percent and gas or service station robbery decreased 6 percent. Since 1968, daytime burglaries of residences have increased 56 percent while all burglary offenses during the same period have risen 38 percent. During 1973, residential burglary losses amounted to $543 million and nonresidential losses totaled $313 million. Property valued at over $2.5 billion w stolen as a result of 382,680 robberies, 2,540,900 burglaries, 4,304,400 larcenies and 923,600 auto thefts. Those dollar losses were reduced by 37 percent due to police recoveries. CRIMES SOLVED Nationwide, law enforcement agencies solved 21 percent of the Crime Index offenses which came to their attention during 1973. Police solved 79 percent of the murders, 63 percent of the aggravated assaults, 51 percent of the reported forcible rapes, 27 percent of the robberies, 19 percent of the larceny-thefts, 18 percent of the burglaries and 16 percent of the auto thefts. One hundred twenty-seven local, county, and state law enforcement officers were killed due to criminal action during 1973. One hundred twelve local, county, and state law enforcement officers were slain in 1972, 126 officers in 1971, 100 officers in 1970, , 86 officers in 1969, arfd 64 officers were killed in 1968. In addition, three Federal officers were slain during 1973 and two Federal officers were slain in 1972. There were four police officers killed in Puerto Rico during 1973 and two in 1972. During 1964-1973, 96 percent of the police killings were solved. Eight hundred fifty-eight law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty from 1964 through 1973. Since 1964, firearms have been used by offenders to commit 95 percent of these police killings. Seventy-one percent of the weapons used were handguns. Os the 1,207 offenders known to have been involved in the killing of police officers during the period 1964-1973, 77 percent were arrested on some criminal charge before becoming involved in the slayings. Forty-two percent of the total offenders were previously arrested for a violent crime such as murder, forcible rape, robbery, assault with intent to kill, and so forth. Fifty-nine percent of the 1,207 offenders involved in police killings had prior convictions on criminal charges. In 1973, approximately 15 of every 100 law enforcement officers were assaulted in the line of duty. An estimated total of 62,300 or 80 percent of these assaults involved the use of personal weapons such as hands, fists, and feet. USE OF FIREARMS During 1973, there were 19,510 murders throughout the United States. Firearms were used to commit 67 percent of these murders. Fifty-three percent of all murders were committed with handguns. Firearms were also used in 26 percent of the aggravated assaults. Since 1968, the use of firearms in the commission of murder has increased 46 percent, and assaults through the use of a firearm have increased 63 percent.
