Legion conducts statewide drive to restore Pyle birthplace
The American Legion, Nappanee Post No. 154, announced today it is joining the Indiana American Legion Department in a statewide drive to raise money to restore the birthplace of famed World War II correspondent Ernie Pyle at Dana. Indiana, in Vermillion County. Lou Suter, Commander of Post 154, and Fred Jensen, Post adjutant, said: ‘‘we believe it is most appropriate that the Nappanee American Legion Post No. 154 join in this statewide undertaking to restore Pyle's birthplace. ‘‘He was a native Hoosier and he started his newspaper reporting career in Indiana (at LaPorte) ■ which mushroomed, into establishing Pyle as one of the all-time
great war correspondents in this country.” Following his graduation from Indiana University, Pyle was a member of the news staff of the old LaPorte Herald before moving on to metropolitan newspapers and a career that made him recognized worldwide as the correspondent who told the story of "GI Joe.” Indiana American Legion officials have announced the drive will continue, under the Legion's auspices, from now until April 18. which will be the 29th anniversary date of Pyle’s death at Ie Shima. The Legion seeks to raise SIIO,OOO, which is the architect's estimate of

restoriitg the home at Dana as a ‘‘living museum" in honor of the famed correspondent. Governor Otis R. Bowen is honorary charrman of the fund drive. Former Governor Ralph Gates of Columbia City and Frank McHaie, past National Democratic Chairman of Indiana, are the fund drive co-chairmen. Both are Past Department Commanders of the Indiana American Legion. The original Pyle home, his birthplace, was a once-beautiful two-story structure, and is now a sad picture as the result of vandalism. The home has stood vacant for 10 years. The home will be moved from its present location to downtown Dana, where
it will be more readilv available to Ipurisls and to protect it from further vandalism. “We seek no glory in this undertaking,” said State Commander Gaylord Sheline. “We Simply feel that Ernie Pyle is worthy of every effort we can make to preserve that piece of Americana, which was so near and dear to him - his home - his birthplace.” 1 Those wishing to make donations may make checks payable to: “Ernie Pyle Home Fund,” care of Post No. 154, 201 W. Lincoln St., Nappanee, Indiana 46550. Cannisters will also be placed at several locations for donations. Contributions should be in by March 22, 1974.

Letters . . . Heart Fund TO THE ADVANCE-NEWS: I would like to say thank you to all of you, who contributed your time and money tdwi this year’s Heart Fund Campaign. Hopefully, our S4OO contribution to the Heart Association will aid in preventing some of the more than one million deaths caused by heart and blood vessel diseases this year. 1 would especially like to thank the sponsors and young men of the North Wood Lettermen's Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, for their help. Unfortunately, getting volunteers to collect Heart Fund contributions seems to ’ be an almost impossible task in Nappanee. However, for the second consecutive year, these boys gave their time. They went out on an especially nasty night and did a great job in collecting over 80 per cent of the total contributions. It s nice to know that, despite the apathy shown by many people, there are young men like these, who can be counted on. Sincerely Joanne Eads Residential Chairman Nappanee Heart Fund Campaign
