Spreading the word

Blue and white table and counter cards have been placed in local eating establishments and businesses announcing the dates of the Nappanee Area Centennial, Aug. 11-17. The Special Publicity Projects Committee, responsible for the cards, has expressed appreciation of local businesses for cooperating with the Centennial promotion by displaying the cards. The card was designed by James Clouse of Nappanee, printed by Evangel Press and distributed by Ruth Clouse, head of the Distribution Committee.

NAPPANEE HOTEL, 1878 One of Nappanee’s first business establishments was Sam Hartman’s Nappanee Hotel, started in the first' summer of the village, in 1875. (In later years it became the Napanee Housewith one p —but that is another story) . account from the Wakarusa Sun of November 1878. “We had the pleasant privilege of mingling our voice with a score of regular boarders and an equal number of transient patrons of the Nappanee Hotel. “We were astonished at its patronage and so well pleased with its general management that we are forced to consider ourselves under obligation to make this notice of it. “It is really a palace hotel. Its every department is furnished in an elegant manner, its menu consists of everything that the most liberal market can supply and a stay within its princely and hosputal (sic) walls is marked by the greatest pleasure and comfort. “Fred Richmond, its chief manager is a gentleman studiously observant of everything that can conduce to the comforts of his guests, and that should redound with credit to its already good name. “A livery and feed stable is in close proximity where good accomodation can be had.” (Wakaursa Sun, November 28,1878) New chapter...
