Remember when only God could end the world? Today man has entered the atomic age, the age of overkill. A mushroom cloud of death and violence shadows the sensibility of our time. The awareness, however, that there is violence all around does not diminish the fact that the starting point of non-vio-lence is the individual. We may concede that violence is in all of us. So is God. The time is now to try His way, together, on a scale never before attempted. Get together with your family, friends, neighbors, or co-workers to discuss the problems of violence and how you can work together to help solve them. Panthers marching to their first victory of the season, and the Raiders sinking to their first loss. Let’s all hope that this was the beginning of a very long and successful winning streak. The North Wood choirs will be putting on their Christmas choral concert this Friday and Sunday. The choirs, under the direction of Miss Rebecca Smith, have been working many long, hard months preparing their selections. A fresh, cheerful evening, and afternoon, of entertainment is promised by the singing students of North Wood. (The choir concert was presented last weekend, and groi s sang to nearly full houses both
days.) Got an opinion or complaint you want expressed? Want to thank someone in front of everyone? Or do you have a cartoon or poem you’d like to share? Students do this and more by using the Free Expression display case in the south surge area. Materials for the case are submitted in a box in the bookstore, where they are later taken and displayed for a week or so in the glass case provided for that use, a comer for serious thought, as well as jokes. Something interesting can always be found there. Like to argue? Intelligently, that is, and about important issues. Then Debate is the English course for you. This course allows one to argue for or against many relevent issues. It is definitely not for the timid the student must stand his ground and defend his point of view with ferocity. Standing up for one’s own opinions is as' important in this class as it is in life. The emphasis of the course is placed on successful and intelligent persuasion backed by research and organization. The student is acquainted with structured, formalized argumentation, and in short is taught how to know what he is talking about when he argues a point. _ Avery different type of convocation was held last Thursday afternoon for the students at North Wood. Afternoon classes were shortened that day, and everyone wenl into the gym to watch a wrestling match. As many students had never seen a wrestling match before, the program began with an explanation of game rules.

Demonstrations of different locks and holds were shown by two NW students. When the match finally got underway, the Varsity team played on one mat and the B team on another. The result was the effect of a two-ring circus, with something different going on in each ring! The match was an interesting change fom the regular school day routine. A liberal imagination is a key ingredient for students taking the English course on fantasy. In “Fantasy: One World Away” the student explores the type of literature in which the reader is not bound to the world we experience with our senses. All we need to step into fantasy is our imagination. Authors like J.R. Tolkien, Ray Bradbury, DuMaurier and Finney have created entire worlds or stepped across the boundaries of space and time, but have told their tales in such a way that the reader is convinced, or at least tempted, to believe them.
