NAPPANEE’S FIRST JAIL BREAK Nappanee’s first jail—or calaboose as the townspeople preferred to call it—was a 14x16 wooden structure with “two good sized cells". At a cost of S2B for carpenter work it was put up in the spring of 1890 on a lot in the first block of West Market street. Two years later it was moved to the town lot on East Lincoln in the approximate area of the old Town Hall, tho somewhat further back from the street, and in the shadow of the old waterworks and light plant of those days. For the most part it was a convenience where drunks could sleep off their jags. Nappanee’s first jail break came in 1901. It was reported then in this manner by the News: BROKE TIIE LOCK AND MAKE A JAIL DELIVERY “The first and only “jail delivery” ever experienced by the Nappanee authorities was made last Saturday night by the padlocks on the calaboose being smashed by some individual, whose identity is now pretty well established, and liberated a prisoner who was “in” for a plain drunk. “Ditcher” Johnson had been placed in the lockup by Marshall Weyburn on the charge of drunkeness. “It is rumored that there was a method in this madness. That is, some other inducement than the mere desire to liberate a drunken man from the calaboose was that Court news... The following cases were heard in Nappanee City Court Saturday afternoon. Loren Sloat, judge pro-tem, presided. Daniel Vandiver, 19, Milford, charged with a bumper law violation, paid total fine and costs of $32. Eugene Mullett, 21, Nappanee, charged with a muffler law violation, was issued a fine and costs of $32 with sl4 costs suspended. A 16-year-old Wakarusa youth, charged with speeding 50 mph in a 30mph zone, paid total fine and costs of $36. Robert Fritz, 25, Mishawaka, charged with speeding 58mph in a 35mph zone, paid total fine and costs of $36. Dennis Hochstetler, 20, Nappanee, charged with not having registration plates, was issued a fine and costs of $32, with sl4 costs suspended. Norman Graley, 22, Mishawaka, charged with speeding 64mph in a 50 mph zone, was issued line and costs of $36, with sl4 costs suspended.

Long Forgotten Incidents in Nappanee's Past Reprinted from contemporary newspaper stories, with, comments
which instigated the smashing of the lock on the bastile. “The truth of the rumor is to investigated and the town board has ordered the Marshal to spare no expense to apprehend the individual suspicioned without delav.” (Nappanee News, April 17, 1901). Whether the case was resolved to the satisfaction of the town board, or is still carried on police records as an unsolved crime is not known. No further mention of it turned up in later issues of The News. North Wood news Suzi Johnson Now that the first nine-week grading period is over, all North Wood students will be changing English classes. It was quite a mess trying to adjust everyone’s schedules, so that they could take the courses they want, and several have ended up not quite happy. Because of this, and the many mix-ups, a whole new technique for scheduling is being contemplated for next year, r As the system stands now, each student's schedule is arranged by a computer. Now since the computer is not human, it can avoid some very human mistakes. But, because it lacks the human capacity to reason, it does make some very dumb and irritating blunders! So the fantastic, space-age computer is hopefully being ditched. The method of scheduling being considered is that used by most colleges and universities. A list of all courses and what periods they will be taught is posted. Each student works out his own schedule according to this information. Careful records are kept, and when a class of a certain period is full, it is so posted, and no one else may apply for it. This method may have its bugs, too, but it is certainly worth a try. Homecoming was last Friday, and a pep rally-bonfire was held Thursday night. Many contests were held at the rally, but most agreed that too much stress was placed on class competition, creating a hostile atmosphere and spoiling the fun. Perhaps that will be kept in mind and avoided in the future. At the football game we didn’t win, but the thought was there. Four lovely floats paraded at halftime and pretty Cindy Adams was elected Homecoming Queen. The floats included a Panther man on safari for zebras, a zebra on a trike behind a Panther on a motorcycle, a giant Super Panthermobile, followed by a zebra in a wagon and a rocky zebra boat trying to catch the Panther battleship. All floats were great, and everyone had fun.
