Letters . . . Christmas play To the Advance News: The Christmas season is always an exciting time in Mexico. During the weeks before the holidays, everyone was busily preparing for the program with the practices being held following the regular services. Everyone always stayed and observed the proceedings with great interest and amusement. Although by the time the play was actually presented, the people knew just what was to take place but it no wSy diminished their excitement the night of the presentation which was very good. The colorful costumes and convincing acting lent an air of realism to the scenes depicting the birth of Christ child. New Year’s Eve was welcomed with the same enthusiasm and preparation as the Christmas play. The brethren planned the Watchnight Service preceeded by a tamale supper. It was an informal service with much singing and testimonies. As the midnight hour approached, the people gathered around the altar in prayer to welcome the new year in. Carlyle had a good trip to the mountains the forepart of December Bro. Rito is going to MaMa Leon twice a week for services now which is a good step forward. The new family we mentioned in a previous letter is responding and now attending the services. Even the man has become interested enough to brave the scorn of his neighbors. So pray for this family. They need Jesus too. We were very happy to have my sister and husband, Kenneth and Ruby Farmwald and Ihree children, with us during Christmas vacation. Their visit made the season seem more like a family occasion. Also we enjoyed a brief visit by Mrs. Emma Miller and son, Clifford, from LaGrange, Indiana, and another son and his family, LaMar and Ella Miller and two children from Michigan. It was a pleasure to show them some of the sights of Mexico and have them with us for Christmas. A special thank you to all of you who contributed to the literature fund. We have already ordered Bibles and New Testaments. So many thanks and God bless you! We appreciated all your cards and letters. Do continue to pray for us and write again soon. Wishing you all a Happy New Year, Carlyle and Freida Welty

Walking alone To the Advance News: An open letter To Nappanee Dear Nappanee: There is a beautiful song titled “You’ll Never Walk Alone” which was introduced in Rogers and Hammerstein’s musical “Carousel”. It is an inspirational message of faith throughout adversity. It has been quite appropriate for those of us on the Nappanee Civic Theater casting .committee during the past two weeks. As the Advance News has noted in the past three editions, casting for Carousel has been in process for two weeks. Until Thursday night, January 4th, we truly “Walked Alone”. On the fourth, we had a magnificent turnout. However, this musical requires an extremely large number and range of singing voices. Consequently, several parts remain to be cast. The purpose of this letter to the citizenry of Nappanee is twofold: First we apologize for our poor judgement in scheduling auditions during the holidays. Secondly, we appeal to you for your support. For more than 15 years, Nappanee has given surrounding communities cause for envy with the calibre of the productions presented by our civic theater and the talent displayed by the participants. Many of you were active in one or more of these productions and can justifiably take pride in your contribution to the theater and to the community. As recently as the Spring of 1972, an excerpt from a Nappanee Civic Theater production represented Northern Indiana as one of six finalist in a statewide contest held in Indianapolis by the Indiana Theater League. During this competition, one of our actors won the regional “best actor” award, and costumes from our production of “Camelot” won awards at the annual costume ball. With your help, we can do better in 1973. Casting will be continued nightly beginning at 7:30 p.m. through Thursday night, January 11th, and later by appointment if necessary. Persons wishing to audition should come to the West Side Park Pavillion or call Mrs. Kay Stutzman at 773-3831. ■jf Please turn to Page 10
