Letter German mountain climbing To the Advance News: Hi! I’m going to try to fill you in on what's been happening since I last wrote. From now' on I’ll write every two weeks, so I won’t have so much to say and can go into more detail about differences in school, food, etc. I hope this finds everyone happy and in good health. Since I last wrote I’ve started school. The first period begins at 7:45, but I only have a first period class on Mon. and Wed. On Mon. I have 2 periods English lit. then an hour of History. Tues. I only have second period German. Wed. I have Chemistry (first two periods), Eng. Lit. for two periods, Ger. and History. Thurs. I have the first 2 periods free then Eng. Lit for two periods, Ger., P. E. and Spanish at 4:30 for one period. (Mon. I also go back for two periods Spanish from '4:30 to 6). Fri. I only have second period Ger. I haven't had any problems with teachers yet and I don’t think I will as long as I behave. They are all really nice and understand when I have trouble understanding. The kids are all really friendly and always include me when possible. I like my schedule except for the split Spanish class, but that’s life. It may sound like I don’t have much to do but translating (especially History and Chemistry) keeps me pretty busy. I’ve seen “Love Story” and “A Man for All Seasons” in German. I understood “Love Story” fairly well, but I had seen it before in English. I didn't get much of the German at all in “A Man For All Seasons”, I did get the main idea, and the scenery was really beautiful. On Sun. my family takes me sightseeing in nearby towns. So far I've been to Bamberg, Wurzburg, and Forcheim. All three were beautiful, but my favorite w'as Wurzburg. It has the most beautiful castle (Residenze) I’ve ever seen and to top that there is a beautiful garden to go along with it. It’s what they call French style, since it’s all planned as if you were building a house. It’s magnificent! I’ve been to a band (rock) concert, two dances and a party. All of them were fun, similar to the ones in the U. S., and I got to knbw more people. Here in the school they have what they ctrll a wander day. This consists of a sack lunch, a train ride to the foot

of the mountains and a long and tiring day. We made a campfire at noon, and I introduced them to marshmallows. It was fun, and I thought I had learned what a mountain and the word up was, but I was to find out later, I hadn’t. On Fri., Oct. 1, I went to the youth center to a discussion group. The girls are all older than me (the girls my age meet during my Spanish class) but nice. It was very interesting and I plan to attend regularly. That night they told me they were going to hike in the mountains near Innsbruck the next weekend, and if I wanted to I could go along, I debated over the money, but decided this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience (how right I was I didn’t realize at the time) and I shouldn’t pass it up. Well, last Fri. we left Nurnburg at 1:C0 in a VW bus wilh no seats in the back which Pete had made into a camper. There were 6 girls, two guys and our lady leader who is about 22. (The guys were also about 22). We parked our bus at about 6:00 in a small village in the Alps near Innsbruck. We then proceeded to go up the mountain with our backpacks for about one and a half hours to a “Gasthof", which is a building with a room of tables where you can eat and rooms for sleeping. The only room with heat is the dining room and you don’t have sheets on the beds only two blankets and a pillow 10” x 15”. There is no hot water, but in a way it was a good thing since we had to get up early and that helped to wake you up. VVe ate supper (we had all brought our own food for the weekend but did buy hot water to make tea) talked a little and went to bed. We were all in the same room together and the beds were on a platform behind a 3 foot wall. They were just mattresses laid side by side. The next morning we got up at 6:30, ate and started on our journey. It was all uphill, but a good wide path and really wasn’t too bad. We reached the summit of the mountain we were on, but it was between two higher ones so we left our packs and climbed to the top of one of the others. By this time I was sold on hiking in the mountains and wanted to do it again. We then ate lunch and started down the other side; this is when the fun began. It was straight down and I wasn’t too sure I was still fond of hiking in the mountains. The paths became only wide enough for

one foot at a time, which was good because you had to watch your feet and couldn’t look to see where you w'ere going or what danger was below the next cliff. When we reached the bottom we had to go up again to the gasthof where we were going to spend the night at this time. It was bigger and there were a lot more people there. (Some were 5 and others were 65). The excitement that night was two men were mountain climbing and it got dark before they reached the bottom so they had to shine a- big light l on the side of the mountain so they could see where to go. They did get down safely, but

I’d never be caught in those mountains at night. This time our mattresses were layed out in a big hall and there were about 40 or 50 of us altogether. Men, women and children the whole works! The next day we went down a little by ropes and steel ladders, and then back up on all fours over rocks. (I know now how rock slides are started). This time we did some real mountain climbing on the way down and some fun sliding on rocks. (Lucky me fell and tore .the seat, of my ' pants, but the worst part was I didn't understand what they said and didn’t realize it for aPlease turn to Page 3a
