Win tourney consolation game Panthers beat Mentone

By DALLAS BEAN The Panthers are going into the 1971 part of their basketball season with a 7-4 record, following a win in the consolation game of the Holiday Tourney, defeating Mentone 68-53. North Wood’s balanced scoring attack saw Greg Frick dumping in 19 points, Mike Callander adding 15, Larry Thompson contributing 12 and Merl Wise hitting 10. The Mentone Bulldogs took fourth place in the tourney, and were led in scoring by Ken Anglin with 18, Tim Smith, 10 and Tim Peffley, nine. The Panthers were hot at the foul line, hitting 10 of 16 for 62%. Mentone’s respectable 17 of 27 free throws also netted them a nifty 63%. The Panthers took a five point lead after one, 17-12, with Wise and Frick getting two apiece and Mike Callander adding a three-point play. The second quarter found Mentone fighting back and at one point leading 24-21, with Ken Anglin keeping his team right in the fight. Merl’s basket and two free throws put the Panthers back on top, 25-24 and the quarter ended with the Panthers leading 29-26. The Jimmies were doubly pleased to beat Concord, as the victory snapped an 18-game losing streak to Concord, including an earlier loss in this season, the only one for Jimtown thus far. The Jimmies full court press paid off as (they utilized it throughout the game. The frontline, consisting of Kim Berlick, Dick Doering and Bob Spaugh dumped in 57 points, each contributing 19. Doug Lamb led Concord with 18. The Panthers yface a tough Rochester quintet this Friday night in an on-the-road conference battle. Win consolation after 1-point loss to Concord Bees down Bulldogs

North Wood’s “B” basketball team was edged by Concord 3736, in their first game of the North Wood Holiday Tournament Monday (Dec. 28), but bounced back to beat Mentone in the consolation game, 57-38. The Panthers lost their tournament opener when Concord sunk a go-ahead basket with seven seconds left in the game. "B” team coach Bob Riley described the Panthers’ cconsolaton win as “our best offensive effort. Everyone played and did a good job,” Riley said. The Bees are now 7-4 for the season. Rick Abel This week’s featured NorthWood basketball player is Rick Abel. , Rick, an 18-year-old senior, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Abel, 217 S. Elkhart Ave., Wakarusa, and plays forward for the Panther squad. Rick has played four seasons each of baseball, football and basketball and three of track. He is a member of the Lettermen’s Club. Rick’s four areas of major study at North Wood include English, Science, Math and Social Studies. 1 His plans for the future include college. He possibly may enroll at Indiana University and would like to play college baseball. Rick is undecided as to bis major aijea of study in college. The senior athlete attended the F. C. A. Summer Conference in 1970; was named to the Football NLC second team in 1969 and 1970; All Area Football Team in 1970; Baseball AllConference in 1969 (First Team) and Baseball All Conference In 1970 (Second Team).
