North Wood's cross country team bounced back the following day, the day after its first loss to Ft. Wayne Snider to win their class and post the lowest score of the 36 teams participating in the New Prairie Invitational Meet at New Prairie. The teams were divided into three groups according to school enrollment. and North Wood won its class with a low score of 26 points. Ft. Wayne beats North Wood after 12 straight wins After 12 straight w’ins, NorthWood's cross country team was finally defeated last Tuesday (Sept. 22) by Ft. Wayne Snider, the team Panther Coach Dave Smith considers “probably the best in the state.” Ft. Wayne outran North Wood, 16-45, in a Four-way meet at East Noble. Panthers’ Homer Miller finished fifth and Tim Nissley placed seventh in the meet. Miller was the first runner to finish in fifth place against Ft. Wayne this season. The Panthers 11th and 12th victories were won against East Noble and Sturgis (Mich.) The Panthers edged East Noble 2629, and whipped Sturgis 18-44. Against Sturgis. North Wood’s Miller placed first, Nissley second and Davidhizar fourth. In the East Noble contest, the first seven places were taken by: Miller'(NW): 10:19; Kelly (EN): 10:24; Smith (EN): 10:26: Nissley (NW): 10:32: Metz (NW): 10:48; Davidhizar (NW): 10:50; Cripe and Thompson CSW): 10:50.

Five Out of Nine The Panthers’ first five runners placed in the top nine. Tim Nissley won individual honors with a time of 9:56. Other Panther runners were Larry Thompson, fourth; Homer Miller, fifth; Stan Cripe, seventh; and Ron Davidhizer, ninth. All five finished within 20 seconds of each other. Second place went to Mishawaka Marian’s Tom Callahan and Mike Van Dyck. . • '’. ‘a*.; 2*;V- ‘' * Marquette finished second to North Wood with 88, Mishawaka Marian had 89, and Wawasee finished fifth, Fairfield ninth and Northridge tenth. Larry Miller of Northridge placed 12th, Barry Whitehead of Fairfield 13th, and Olsen of Wawasee 14th. In the second race for the smaller schools, Concord placed fourth and the Minutemen had the top runner with Rick Laughman, who toured the course in 9:54, followed by Tim Quigley of Culver Military, Jim Jeffries of Plymouth and Terry Hasen of Bremen. Culver Military won this second section with 73 points, Lakeshore had 100, Plymouth 108, Concord 121, New Prairie 133 and Bremen 135. Jimtown placed tenth. Other Concord Runners Steve Hartman placed for Concord, Stu Smucker vvas 16th, Ross Wenger 37th, * and Dave Hardy 58th. Jimtown’s first runner was Gary Zimmerman who placed 24th. In the .class for the schools with over 1.000 students in the top three grades, Portage captured team honors with 68, points, Chesterton had 75, Penn 80, LaPorte 98 and LaSalle 118.

Meet director, Amzie Miller, principal of New Prairie High School, said he is planning to have 53 schools in next year’s running with two in the over 1,000 enrollment and three under 1,000.

Thanks to the generosity of local merchants most everyone got a prize. Steve Hockert was the champion as he beat out Bill Musser and Dave Hockert who tied for second place. Winner of the A flight was Bruce Tobias ,B, Joe Kaufman, C, Dick Dallas, D, Roger Grimm and E, Chuck Grimm. Senior champ was Dave Hockert. Prizes were awarded following a dinner with all the trimmings. Football tie for Junior High Nappanee’s Junior High Football team played their first contest last Thursday at Columbia City and played to a 6-6 tie. Todd Sheets turned in an outstanding performance as a running back for the offense, and Coach Lee Price’s defense was strong all during the game. A highlight of the game was an intercepted pass by Nappanee’s Dave Anderson. The Nappanee TD came on a Columbia City handoff which was stolen by Gail Harman and followed by a 40 yard run.
